Editorial Review: A pic about a man who can not get a date and is then cursed witha beautiful, neurotic woman he can't get rid of. Woo Reviews: Woo Who? 2009-05-10 - There are three kinds of bad comedy: The painful, the so-bad-its good and the boring. This movie falls in the third category. In 1998, a black movie bombed so bad in theaters that it was dissed by everybody. That movie was Woo. Steve Harvey even took a swipe at the movie in the Steve Harvey Show: "Im available like 20 copies of Woo at Blockbuster". Now I know that a movie that bombs at the box office doesnt always mean its bad but Woo really does stink. The positive reviews on Amazon are the first positive comments that I ever heard for this movie. I hated this movie. Everybody I knew hated this movie. These positive reviews are funnier than the actual movie itself. Woo looks like a sitcom that was canceled for a good reason.
Story: Tim is set on a blind date with a Woo, a nutty woman who spends most of their date trying to loosen him up. They get into some messed up situations and end up falling for each other in the end.
What kills Woo is that nobody in this movie is likable. Tim is a hapless geek, Woo is a neurotic freak and Tim's friends are the most ignoble and annoying black men ever in a movie. On top of all that Woo is quite boring. I watched it recently and had to fight sleep for 90 minutes. Its a shame to because the actors in this movie all have personality but it doesnt show in this film. Its not their fault, its the dull material they had to work with. There is only one time I laughed: when Frankie and Romaine where trying to convince Hop that he was being fawned over by drag queens. Every other attempt at humor falls flatter than Suge Knight after one punch. You know a movie sucks when Dave Chapelle isnt even funny in it and he can be very funny even when he is in a crap movie(think Screwed). In short dont waste your time with this bomb. The script sucks and every actor and actress looks like they were bored to death while participating in it. Plus Jada and Tommy have zero chemistry together. Jada Pinkett would move on into better things and Tommy Davidson's career started to fold after this movie. If you want a better movie starring Tommy Davidson stick with Strictly Business and Booty Call. If you want a better movie starring Jada Pinkett stick with A Low Down Dirty Shame. Woo is a waste of time and film.
Satisfied 2009-02-26 - This was a really nice product. It came just as the description said it would. It was still wrapped in its original packaging and it was a great buy.
Laugh Outloud Movie 2007-10-05 - This is one of my favorite movies. To be able to purchase it on dvd was rewarding. Jada Pinkett-Smith is a joy to watch.
A fun romp 2007-05-13 - I came across this movie by chance last night, and I really enjoyed it. Sassy, classy Woo (who seems to miraculously know all the right people in all the right and wrong places) is bent on jerking around her blind date, uptight lawyer-wannabe Tim. Bitter over being treated like an object, she's out to teach the man (any man, in fact) a lesson. And while she does put Tim and his friends through their paces during this first date from hell, Tim also inspires Woo to take the chip off of her shoulder for at least a little while to give love a chance.
Woo and Tim's adventures are interspersed with scenes from the goofy love life of Woo's cousin and Tim's best friend, the couple who set up the blind date in the first place. They are desperate to get Woo out of the way so they can indulge in a night of no-holds-barred passion. While some of these scenes are wicked funny, that particular sub-plot disappears towards the end of the movie without any particular resolution. This was a bit of a disappointment, but I guess the director/editors decided they couldn't top the "chicken ho" bit and opted to leave well enough alone. After that, the focus of the movie sticks to setting up Woo and Tim's "happily ever after." (Was even hoping for something in the credits that would wrap up that storyline, but no such luck.)
All in all, this movie was an entertaining romp, and not a bad way to spend part of an evening.
Hilarious! Hysterical! 2006-06-21 - After eight years of ignoring this movie - primarily due to the negative reviews it got - I finally got to see it the other night on TV. I laughed non-stop. It's a typical story of a blind date that seems doomed for failure but ends in romance. As saccharine as the end of the movie may be and as cynical and jaded I may well be, I'm not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes as the end credits rolled. I thought it was great. Not all movies are made to answer some of life's most puzzling questions. Not all movies are supposed to be 'intelligent' or 'thought-provoking'. Not all movies are made to change the world. Some movies are made for us to be able to sit back for one and a half hours, forget all our troubles and just have a good scream. This is one of those movies and I'm getting the DVD. I can't wait to watch it again.
All my favourite comedy actors are here: Jada of course (looking as lovely as I've ever seen her), Dave Chapelle, Duane Martin, Paula Jai Parker, Aida Turturro, LL Cool J and Dartanyan Edmonds. Even Foxy Brown makes an appearance and it's not too bad either.
But most of all, there's Tommy Davidson. Ah, Tommy Davidson. Not everyone's cup of tea, apparently, but he always does it for me.
If this movie taught me one lesson it's to let reviews INFORM my decisions on what movies to see and buy, and not to let them influence them. This is definitely one for the collection!
