Editorial Review:
Joely Richardson shines in Maybe Baby, about a thirtysomething British couple struggling to have a child. After dabbling in fertility rituals and having sex according to a rigorous ovulation schedule, Lucy (Richardson) and Sam (Hugh Laurie) find their relationship tested by temptation; Lucy starts to yearn for a hunky young actor that her talent agency is representing, and Sam starts writing a seriocomic screenplay about their infertility--which he doesn't tell Lucy about, because she's already forbidden him to write it. Everything is fine until Sam delves into her diary in order to get a better grip on a woman's consciousness and learns more than he bargained for. Maybe Baby is a sincere and lighthearted movie, sprinkled with comic turns from Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous), and others. Laurie is solid, but it's Richardson's charm and intelligence that makes it work. --Bret Fetzer
Maybe Baby [Region 2] Reviews:
One of my favourite girly movies
2009-09-09 - Love this film! I purchased two dvds - one for me & one for my friend!
We watched it in the car on a very long drive & both enjoyed it tonnes.
I've seen it maybe five times now & still love it so much.
They should be thankful!!
2009-07-09 - Now let's see? Right to the point, most people have to pay for birth control pills or other means NOT to have kids and these two are complaining? How ungrateful to God can you get? Just accept that you are going to be free of snot nosed little packages with diapers full of you know what & ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM!! This is not a funny movie--PRETTY LAME IS MORE LIKE IT!!
Amazing!!!
2009-04-07 - I laughed, I cried it was better than Cats!
Seriously, these characters were made for each other. You felt for them both through every aspect of the movie. Hugh Laurie was brilliant, and Joely Richardson was stunning. I'm glad I got the British version, I laughed myself silly and found myself yelling at the tv.... silly American, they can't HEAR YOU!!!
I highly recommend this movie! Fantastically made!
MAYBE BABY MOVIE
2009-02-19 - THIS IS BRILLANTLY ACCURATE PORTRAYAL OF A COUPLE, DEEPLY IN LOVE, WHO FACE THE CHALLENGES OF INFERTILITY. THERE IS A PERFECT BALANCE OF COMEDY AND DRAMA AND HUGH LAURIE BRINGS HIS SENSE OF HUMOR AND PATHOS TO THE SCRIPT WITH A VERY SENSITIVE PORTRAYAL OF A MIDDLE MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEE OF THE BRITISH BROADCASTING COMPANY, THE BBC. AS AN AMERICAN WHO HAS LIVED IN ENGLAND, THIS MOVIE IS SO WONDERFULLY TYPICAL OF THE BRITISH SENSE OF HUMOR, DRY, SUBTLE, BUT GLARINGLY PRESENT. ALL IN ALL, A MOST ENJOYABLE FILM.
OK, but not as funny as I'd imagined.
2008-12-16 - The movie was ok, but I had really expected more out of it because it starred two actors from two of my favorite TV shows (Nip/Tuck & House.
