Editorial Review:
Something About Beckhamis a revealing insight into the extraordinary world of soccer’s biggest name and pop culture icon, David Beckham. Since his fall from grace after the 1998 World Cup, Beckham’s life has undergone extreme transformation. He became a father, got married, won the Treble, and found himself captain of Team England. This program looks at what it is that enabled this lad from the East of London to make it in the world of professional soccer. How, for example, did he battle the unprecedented public fury over his World Cup performance to regain public confidence? How exactly does he continue to ride the ups and downs of celebrity life to reign as the soccer icon of England? These and many more intriguing questions are asked and answered in this revealing program.
This special DVD offers interviews with people close to him both on and off the field, and asks what it is that makes this super player tick. In the world of sports, former England caretakermanager Peter Taylor and Manchester United hero Sir Bobby Charlton discuss Beckham’s rise to fame. Also featured is a rare interview with Beckham idol and mentor, Eric Cantona, who speaks for one of the first times since leaving the UK, about Sir Alex Ferguson’s influence on young players and coping with fan abuse.
Also included in this informative DVD are interviews with a host of celebrities and people in the fashion industry who discuss Beckham’s role off the field as fashion icon and gay pin-up, as well as how this man has transformed the face of the modern-day soccer player. There is no doubting Beckham’s ability on the field, but it is his highly demanding pop-star lifestyle off the field that has many wondering if he has the strength of character to remain focused and prove his critics wrong. Watch this program and find out for yourself.
Something About Beckham Reviews:
Something about Beckham
2007-08-12 - I have been watching David Beckham through out his career, I can't get enough of him.....
Very informative DVD
2007-01-17 - Contrary to the other review, I found this program to be insightful and well done. I enjoyed learning about his life outside of soccer. The interviews were very informative.
Nothing About Beckham...that is, on the field
2006-01-15 - SOCCER/FOOTBALL FANS: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS DVD. I should have guessed before buying this that it would be the sports equivalent of the E! channel, but with worse copy. this is horrible stuff, unless you need to know every detail about his wife, where he put his tattoo, why he thinks wearing a sarong is cool, or what it's like to have breakfast with the Beckhams. this is all paparazzi-and-headline gobbledygook. you get some footage of the World Cup red card and his first goal with Man.United, but incredibly, none of his goal-from-half, the goal vs. Greece from a direct free kick, or any substantial footage of the treble, or even playing alongside Cantona, his mentor. what you get is a few sound bites of Cantona interviewed somewhere in the French wine country, looking like a poet in exile. save your money, there are other dvds about him. but because the public seems only to give a damn about his image and private life, I'm hesitant to get disappointed again!
