Editorial Review:
Always up for messing with the formal expectations of rock, Bowie teamed up with Brian Eno for three frustrating but compelling albums, starting with Low. Treated instruments are claustrophobically crowded together, and Bowie's voice leaps in and out of the mix seemingly at will. Where it seems like it might show up, it's replaced by wailing synths or nothing at all, and it vanishes altogether from most of the second half-- a series of long, menacing, barely mobile synth explorations. To prove that they could make pop out of these herky-jerky mix tricks, they pull off "Sound And Vision" in the middle of the disc, but the essence of Low is that the "star" is either absent or alarmingly in your face. --Douglas Wolk

Low Reviews:
Terrible 1 Star Review
2009-08-02 - 2 good songs best is always crashing in the same car. The rest are poorly planned instrumentals that not only don't stand the test of time but were irrelivent when the albumb first came out.

David Bowie Low Album 5 Star Review
2009-08-01 - This is one of the best CD's or music albums ever made by David Bowie and by anyone. First off the cover image is both surreal and slightly painting like. which serves the music and overall concept well. Bowie has been one of the most interesting music artist and all around artist for the last 40 years. So this CD is one of the best in his collection of recordings. It's a buy and a listen.

Favorite Bowie Album 5 Star Review
2009-07-18 - This music is fantastic. This album is too often overlooked, and it is spectacular. every song is a gem

Of a Time and Place 5 Star Review
2009-05-14 - The time was the mid 70's, David Bowie had reached the top of the pop world through the glam theatrics of Ziggy Stardust, then topped himself commercially with Philly soul infused sounds of YOUNG AMERICANS, FAME and GOLDEN YEARS. Always one to keep moving and on the cutting edge, Bowie grabbed prankster/uberproducer Brian Eno and headed for Cold War front lines of Berlin to recreate his sound by following the influence of German avant-garde groups like Neu! and Can.

LOW, the first result of this move was ear opening and quite shocking to most ears. While it sold well on the Bowie name alone, many were confused and disappointed in the music of LOW. While this is Bowie's record, and most songwriting credits list him, Eno makes a clear sonic imprint, echoing BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE and ANOTHER GREEN WORLD. Side One (the first seven songs) were the poppier side, consisting of melodic, but fractured songs that did not follow convention. The second side consists of four more ponderous pieces that if they feature vocals, they appear as almost an afterthought. Bowie obviously onto something, as the influence of LOW is still rippling through music thirty some years after the fact. Its influence is felt in the post punk music of Joy Division, The Cure and the more modern sounds of NIN and Radiohead.

While few if any of these songs show up on standard Bowie compilations, this to my ears is the best album that Bowie ever made, more consistent in sound and direction that Ziggy, Alladine Sane or Heroes. A timeless classic that has transcended both time and place.

Low 4 Star Review
2009-05-09 - Low being Bowie's 1977 release and his first in the Berlin triology and it did very well in the UK charts peaking at #2 and reached #11 in the Billboard 200 and #10 in Norway. "Sound and Vision" being the only track release as a single did quite well and peaked at #3 in the UK Singles Chart. The booklet is quite avantgarde with Bowie photographed in different poses in strange outfits that look very New Wave. All the lyrics are included and we get a personnel list that list whom and what they play on the album. 4/5.
