Description of Connie And Carla (Widescreen Edition):
Some Like It Hot gets a queer makeover in Connie and Carla, a lightweight comedy from the writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In Billy Wilder's classic, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis teamed up in a male-as-female drag comedy, whereas here, writer-star Nia Vardalos goes a step further (and several derivative steps backwards), teaming up with Toni Collette as the titular heroines, playing women posing as men posing as women--kind of like Victor/Victoria with excess mascara. They witness a murder, and the killer knows it, so they hightail it out to West Hollywood, where (with the help of poodle wigs and garish cosmetics) they blend in with the performing drag queens at the Handlebar club, where queer makeovers are fabulously mandatory. Connie (that's Vardalos, to Collette's ditzy Carla) gets the hots for a drag queen's straight brother (David Duchovny), and even Debbie Reynolds pitches in to give a show that any gay crowd would love. There are some well-earned laughs along the way, but the whole thing feels like a sitcom we've seen before, which pretty much summarizes Vardalos's career to date. Vardalos has genuine comedic talent (and so does Collette), but it's adrift in this hash of old ideas. --Jeff Shannon
Connie And Carla (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Region 2
2009-12-09 -
The Connie and Carla DVD is a region 2, a video intended to be played on DVD players in Europe, something I didn't know. I would like to return it because it doesn't work on my player or most players in the USA. The region 2 category should have been more clearly explained. Why sell it in the US when it won't work? I tried to contact the sellers but got no response.

This movie is a must see!!!
2009-10-05 - I loved the movie!!! I laughed so hard I cried. Well worth the money I paid for it!
From Out of Left Field
2009-07-26 - I bought this film for my wife because she was a big fan of Nia Vardalos in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and Toni Collette in "Muriel's Wedding". I wasn't expecting much because if memory serves it received lukewarm critical reaction and barely registered a blip at the box office. Much to my surprise I was entertained from start to finish. I was expecting a tired rehash of "Some Like It Hot" but "Connie and Carla" has it's own mojo working. Where to begin. Vardalos and Collette riff of each other impeccably whether doing comic shtick or belting out some terrific Broadway chestnuts. The film's underlying theme is tolerance but it's not beaten into the ground lest it gets in the way of the fun. Recommended without reservation. Noteworthy is the appearance of Ian Gomez, Vardalos' real life spouse, as the club owner. Gomez used to be on one of my favorite TV shows, the American version of the British improv show, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL
2009-07-06 - This has become our stress relief when things get tough. We have literally watched this movie so often my sister and I have to purchase another copy, because ours is starting to glitch from over use. This is a laugh out loud, wonderful, enjoyable movie. The singing is incredible and all of the characters are lovable. The story line is great, acting is absolutely first rate and it is just plain fun. There is not one swear word in the whole movie - which means great writing. This is an absolute must see. It's a hoot!
loved Connie & Carla
2009-06-27 - This is one of my favorite all time movies! About two girls who are running from the mob who play for dinner theatre. They dress up like men in drag! It is sooo funny and reminds me of Some Like It Hot! Plenty of music and a lot of funny stuff! Paula in N.J.
