Editorial Review:
Some Like It Hot gets a queer makeover in Connie and Carla, a lightweight comedy from the writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In Billy Wilder's classic, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis teamed up in a male-as-female drag comedy, whereas here, writer-star Nia Vardalos goes a step further (and several derivative steps backwards), teaming up with Toni Collette as the titular heroines, playing women posing as men posing as women--kind of like Victor/Victoria with excess mascara. They witness a murder, and the killer knows it, so they hightail it out to West Hollywood, where (with the help of poodle wigs and garish cosmetics) they blend in with the performing drag queens at the Handlebar club, where queer makeovers are fabulously mandatory. Connie (that's Vardalos, to Collette's ditzy Carla) gets the hots for a drag queen's straight brother (David Duchovny), and even Debbie Reynolds pitches in to give a show that any gay crowd would love. There are some well-earned laughs along the way, but the whole thing feels like a sitcom we've seen before, which pretty much summarizes Vardalos's career to date. Vardalos has genuine comedic talent (and so does Collette), but it's adrift in this hash of old ideas. --Jeff Shannon
Connie and Carla [Region 2] Reviews:
"Extremely Funny"
2009-12-27 - Although not a major boxoffice hit, "Connie and Carla" became popular after airings on television and its availability on the home video market. The movie is about two best friends who witness a crime and are forced to go on the run and wear disguises in order to keep from getting killed. While in Hollywood the pair decide to pretend they are guys who are drag queens, and they eventually get a job at a nightclub. The plot is not fantastic by any means, but the performances are flawless, the music entertaining, and the laughs hilarious. If you enjoy "Connie and Carla" you will love "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and "Too Wong Foo...Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar", two movies with drag queen storylines and fantastic soundtracks, similar in vein to this one. Nia Vardalos, one of the stars of Connie and Carla" as well as its screenwriter, became an overnight sensation after she starred and wrote the blockbuster "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". This DVD contains deleted scenes, outtakes, commentary, and more. Leonard Maltin says the film is "impossible to resist".
What a hoot!
2009-12-27 - Nia Vardalos is wonderful. Her stuff is always funny, I have seen all her movies and without exception, they all kept me in stitches, but Connie and Carla is, by far, my favorite. I can watch it over and over and I still laugh.
laugh 'til you cry
2009-12-15 - If you have not yet looked at Connie and Carla, then run, dont walk, to your nearest video rental and rent it. Then after you rent it go to Amazon and buy it for you will love the movie. Yes, the ftory line is far fetched, but the music and the laughs will make it all worth while. I give this movie five stars and would give it ten stars if I could.

Connie and Carla
2009-12-11 - I bought this movie because David Duchovny stars in it. Also, because it was written by and stars Nia Vardalos, whom I enjoyed in "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding." Although there are similarities to "Some Like it Hot" starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, there are enough differences to make it stand on its own merits. I found myself laughing so hard that I cried and my stomach hurt. Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette are hilarious and beautiful as drag queens, Connie and Carla. David Duchovny plays Jeff, whose brother Robert is a homosexual cross-dresser. He acts the part honestly, just like anyone would who finds out, after becoming an adult, why his brother left home. Again, Duchovny shows his talent for comedy. I highly recommend this film if you want some lighthearted entertainment.
Region 2
2009-12-09 -
The Connie and Carla DVD is a region 2, a video intended to be played on DVD players in Europe, something I didn't know. I would like to return it because it doesn't work on my player or most players in the USA. The region 2 category should have been more clearly explained. Why sell it in the US when it won't work? I tried to contact the sellers but got no response.
