2009 EP from the Indie favorites containing four new tracks and one unreleased demo. The band's platinum selling album Plans was a huge success, which came after their DVD collection Directions, which sold over 30,000 copies. Following up those was no easy task, but Narrow Stairs has already been praised by MTV.com as the band's most daring and adventurous effort to date. Now, although the four new tracks are a little different from those on the last album, The Open Door can be considered a companion piece to Narrow Stairs.

2009-09-18 - typical DCFC- catchy hooks, clever lyrics and a little piece of angst. Not their finest work, but certainly their best EP since FORBIDDEN LOVE
Death Cab May Be Peaking 
2009-08-27 - I'm not a Death Cab-listening Orange County-watching fanatic, but threw my hat in the ring a few years back with Transatlanticism. The Sound of Settling was good all-around, and I liked the lyrics to a few other tunes, but overall the disc fell quickly out of my rotation, and I assumed that I just wouldn't ever like them as much as some do. An ex-girlfriend was into their older stuff, but cursory listens didn't make me think otherwise, and I kept my attitude up through the Plans era. Then I was haunted. David Dye, a man who I will never stop giving props to, even as he continues to latch onto some music I just can't stand, played "I Will Possess Your Heart" a few times on his show--forgoing the radio edit and using a precious eight minutes of his show to get the song heard.
I liked Narrow Stairs a lot, but not even close to how much I love this short piece. "Little Bribes" is my standout, which makes it a bit front-loaded, but I like the whole thing. I love smart pop music, and Ben Gibbard finally got in sync with me when he wrote these tunes. Huzzah!
Very Dull by Death Cab standards 
2009-07-18 - This disc is a companion piece, which is good because it doesn't stand up very well on it's own. There is no innovation or much tonal interest to speak of here, as DCFC have previously produced (Plans), and I'm frankly surprised that this release has as good a rating as it does (a frequent occurence on Amazon). It's musically solid but inherently boring. Not every release can be brilliant, though. This is essentially a money-making release. Check it out at the library if you think you have to hear it.

2009-07-10 - I think these songs are just so perfect. I don't know how else to say it. I wouldn't change a thing about any of them. This EP is addictive and I pretty much have to listen to it each day.
Something different this way comes...
2009-06-08 - This EP works on several levels. It works as a B-sides to Narrow Stairs. It works as a small collection of different material from the Indy band turned juggernaut DEATH CAB. It also works as half an album that could be used to inspire a larger collection at a later time. Overall it is very listenable, funny, and just enough different from DEATH CAB's normal fare to make you sit up and pay attention.
There are 5 tracks:
"Little Bribes" is probably my least favorite track, as it sounds just a bit too much like Barenaked Ladies for my tastes. It's funny, upbeat, and slightly honky-tonky.
"A Diamond And A Tether," slows things down, and is more immediately recognizable as DEATH CAB. It is one of the best in this short collection, with strong hooks and guitar play.
"My Mirror Speaks," has a rock vibe and the bass line to back it up. It's a rythmic, forceful song that I quite like.
"I Was Once a Loyal Lover," has an electronica-fuzz intensity to it. Distorted electric guitars open up the song and are followed up by deep keyboard and another intense beat.
"Talking Bird (Demo," slows things back down with a wispy guitar that sounds almost harp like. Lyrical and clean with a true 'singer-songwriter' style, it is pretty if not remarkable.
4/5 Stars. A solid EP well worth the purchase for any DEATH CAB fan.
