Editorial Review:
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JESUS OF NAZARETH, FROM HIS HUMBLEBEGINNINGS AS A CARPENTER TO HIS DESTINY AS THE SON OF GOD, ARE VIVIDLY RETOLD IN THIS EPIC MOVIE EVENT. WHEN HIS EARTHLY FATHER DIES, MARY TELLS JESUS THE TIME HAS COME TO FULFILL HISPROPHECY.
Description of Jesus:
Tackling the story of Jesus for film is bound to incur controversy. Yet, in a bold move, CBS produced the television miniseries Jesus, which not only retells the biblical story, but takes a look at the more human side of the man. Jeremy Sisto stars, and although it takes a little while for him to gather enough momentum to have us believing him in this role, overall he is surprisingly convincing. While the movie does stray from strict scripture--Jesus is shown feeling conflicted over his feelings for Lazarus's sister Mary; Satan, portrayed by Jeroen Krabbé, works hard at convincing Jesus to stray from his path--most of the plot will be familiar to viewers. Beginning with an adult Jesus, who works with his father as a carpenter, the program traces his life and death through resurrection. The strong supporting cast, including Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate, and Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene, lends to the credibility of the miniseries. This is a satisfying retelling of the life of Jesus and will please those who want new ways to explore biblical stories, as Jesus not only reinforces the ideals of the New Testament but shows Jesus as a complex individual. --Jenny Brown
Jesus Reviews:
The Jesus I Know
2009-08-31 - This version of the classic tale of the story of Jesus is the best one so far! It shows Jesus as a man with real emotions and real feelings. The other versions of this story in the past, reflected Jesus as a solemn and quiet man. He is the son of God yes, but he was a man as well. I really enjoyed this version because it allowed us to see a side of Jesus not shown in other "Jesus" movies and Jeremy Sisto captures it brilliantly! To walk with Jesus was an adventure to say the least and this movie allows us to see him portrayed with real feelings! He was a happy person and this film makes you believe that, excellent work! I recommend this to all who want a little more from our Lord and Savior!
Not disappointed
2009-05-24 - A wonderful re-telling of the greatest of stories. Unlike some movies of Jesus' life, this one doesn't portray him in a stiff, wooden fashion -- but as a believable character, combining both divine and human characteristics.
The story also makes understandable some of the underlying political intrigues that are a crucial part of the story, and it is done in an interesting way.
The acting is wonderful, the characters believable, and the story moving and compelling.
I think it is one of the best movie depictions I have seen. The only thing I would change might be the "slick car salesman" style devil shown in the temptation scene -- but who could know how best to portray such a character? This portrayal may be as likely as any other.
I certainly do not regret purchasing this DVD, and would recommend it to others.
Best Jesus film
2009-05-19 - This is the best Jesus film. It is interpretive from a Catholic perspective rather than an attempt at literalism. Jesus is portrayed as both human and divine in this depiction. It is both reverent and challenging to preconceptions. Very thought provoking. Not recommended for children.
"Jesus" movie
2009-05-15 - This "Jesus" movie has got to be the best movie for those who would like to know what it is like to have been living when Jesus was here on Earth--the actor who portrays Jesus is excellent--actually made me feel like I was right there knowing Jesus ..if you get this movie, you will not regret it--#1 movie in my book.
Trojan Horse
2009-02-17 - I titled this review Trojan Horse because I thought that I would learn something new about Jesus, but, I was sadly mistaken. This movie does NOT accurately portray Jesus' character or life. The problem with this movie is NOT a matter of interpretation. Whether you are a liberal, moderate or conservative Christian this movie is appalling and offensive. It is blatantly biblically inaccurate. This movie is a plague of lies. See examples already given by other viewers for specifics. Why title the movie Jesus - if they are NOT going to base his character or life on scripture?
Jesus is amazing enough why NOT make an accurate portrayal? We, as God's people oftentimes can fall short of the blessings he has given us. We can also place restrictions on God and see only a small part of our all encompassing Lord and Savior. God is loving, compassionate, patient, forgiving, freeing, healing, and generous. God is also funny, witty, creative, relatable, dependable and passionate. There is so much good material from the bible that would make a fascinating and accurate movie.
Some people have commented how this movie brought them closer to Jesus and that is wonderful - Praise Jesus! It shows how truly amazing God is that he has used this movie to bring people closer to him. If God is leading you to watch this movie than do so; otherwise, I strongly encourage you to pass on this movie.
