Fans of the early-'60s sitcom are naturally disappointed by this more juvenile approach to the old concept, which found Navy Captain McHale commanding a merry band of hustlers in the Pacific. Tom Arnold plays the updated title character, and while there's every reason he could have done a fine job, the script eschews the show's tone for something broader and dumber. A lost opportunity, all right, and the original McHale, Ernest Borgnine, appears to give it his blessing with a cameo as Pentagon brass. --Tom Keogh

disappointing 
2008-04-23 - I really looked forward to this movie. 2 words, very disappointing. I enjoyed the original series very much. It was nothing(ok, it was about the Navy) like the original. I watched it once, no desire to watch it again. And, Tom Arnold? They could have done a lot better with almost any other actor. There are a few(very few) times, I've liked Tom Arnold. He is not a comedic actor. He's tried many times, why does he keep trying? If you like McHale's Navy, watch the original McHale's Navy. If you like Tom Arnold, try the movie, but I believe you will still be disappointed.
fun movie
2008-02-25 - Its a fun movie, good for the whole family. The characters are over the top, and the story is funny. Its a great "tribute" to the original series. I very highly recommend it.
