NWOBH 3 Star Review
2008-11-09 - When the NWOBH came to the United States everyone was excited. I mean, the NWOBH swept America with it's raw, unpolised, NWOBH sound. The NWOBH bands included Iron Maiden, Saxxon and Def Leppard. When you listen to NWOBH you can understand the new wave from Britain that changed the Heavy Metal Scene. With Def Leppard, and the unique metal-ness they bring to NWOBH, it's definitely British and Heavy, possibly new. If you're a huge of NWOBH, or just new to the whole NWOBH scene, then you should definitely pick this up. It's a perfect example of the new metal that was from Britain in the new wave era. NWBOH forever!!!

a little less mature, but Def Lep all the way 3 Star Review
2008-10-22 - There are two things I hear about On Through The Night, Def Leppard's debut, that I disagree with. One is that it doesn't sound like Def Leppard. To me it sounds like them 100% - maybe a little more raw and fueled by youth, but still the same band that made High N Dry and (replacing Pete with Phil) Pyromania. The other thing that I disagree with is that this is a heavy metal album. This is nowhere near the style of Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, who I would consider the "NWOBM" of this era. Yes, OTTN is heavier and less pop than anything that followed, but it still sounds like Def Leppard's instantly recognizable brand of hook-laden arena rock with a big sound and sing-along vibe. Elliot hasn't quite got that ultralayered harmony going, so his vocals sound, well... not quite as full or high, but his voice is up to par for these songs. Pete's guitar style is also more aggressive than his replacement's, which adds to the attack of this album. If you like Def Leppard be sure to check out their first album, it's a great one from a classic band.

rocks in its own right 5 Star Review
2008-05-27 - I had this on vinyl back in the day, but my other DL records were on so much they pretty much eclipsed this one as far as spin time. I just bought it last week again on CD and am really enjoying it. I think it's much better than just a decent debut by an up and coming band, or an interesting look at DL before they hit the sound they would run with. Anyone who heard this at the time it came out would have to have realized this band was going no where but up, up, up.
In fact if this album had gotten the production it deserved DL could have gotten an even earlier launch. As it happened though, hearing just this single debut album made John "Mutt" Lange to realize that DL was a band worth working with. He had produced both Highway to Hell and Back in Black, for AC/DC and had an undeniable role in getting AC/DC to superstardom. I can't think of any other music producer with 2 diamond albums by different bands to their credit, diamond being sales of 10M. With this, you will hear what made up his mind to work with this awesome then hard-rockin' band: a great cohesive sound bursting with talent and a powerful synergy within the band that allowed them to explore some different directions equally impressively.
This is completely different from other DL in ways other reviewers have covered. It is not the glam sound DL wound up with on Pyro, and it's completely--like night and day--different even from High 'N' Dry (with Lange producing), which came out right after this the very next year. But the fact that DL could sound so good in three completely different ways, in three consecutive albums--bang, bang, bang--just speaks to the talent of this band all the more. So get this, put it on, turn it up and treat yourself to the first of those different sounds.
