Description of Pyromania:
Def Leppard's rock sensibilities shot them right to the top of the charts in the '80s. On their third album, Pyromania, the band reconciled new wave melodicism with heavy metal and catchy hooks without compromising any of its edge. The album has sold over 10 million copies, due in part to heavy rotation on MTV. But even without their ubiquitous television presence, anthems like "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" still had the stuff that drove the kids crazy. Bursts of screaming guitars and simple power riffs joined forces with choruses that begged to be shouted along to. Guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clarke may have provided all the pyrotechnics on Pyromania, but the focal point of Def Leppard's sound, particularly for their teenage female fans, was singer Joe Elliott's voice (and, of course, his hair). The record--an essential brick in the foundation of '80s metal--also contains the hit "Photograph." --Steve Gdula
Pyromania Reviews:
Better to burn out...
2009-12-05 - `Pyromania' was a watershed record for Def Leppard and for the Eighties in general as it broke the band big in America no doubt through the combined efforts of strong radio play and MTV and it also made heavy metal commercially acceptable in a way it never really had been before. Mutt Lange wanted to create a ``Star Wars' for the ears' and a rock record to rival pop phenoms like Michael Jackson and `Pyromania' nearly achieved this with its radio friendly , hook heavy hard rock that made the Sheffield lads teen beat idols and Joe Elliot's Union Jack sleeveless a pop icon for the Valley Girl generation. As a one who grew up in this era, I can honestly say Def Leppard and this mega-album hit me rather hard and hooked me into hard rock forever. However looking back on this record and its even more ridiculously successful follow-up `Hysteria' I feel like the Leps lost something early to the Mutt Lange hit making machine and that their earlier working class boys' metal from the first two records was lost forever. For that reason alone I deplore `Pyromania' though it is still a fantastic record. I had friend in high school who begrudgingly liked metal because of Leppard and it was popular but he also liked pop like Wham and Madonna and right away I knew that there was a problem with `Pyromania'. It was for all intents and purposes metal for non metal people and that is why I will always have a chip on my shoulder for it. Once Def Leppard left the NWOBHM far behind; they would NEVER be among my favorite bands though I do like them still very much to this day. As far as the record itself goes, the hits speak for themselves and after the years have gone by I can now enjoy them more than ever....."Photograph" (such a woman, you've got style), "Foolin'" (is there anybody out there?) and of course "Rock of Ages" (man, I always thought the song was much heavier than it really was). Some of the deeper cuts became more of my favorites of course with "Too Late for Love", "Comin' under Fire", and "Action, Not Words" having more staying power because they weren't beaten to death by MTV. `Pyromania' definitely deserves it classic status but still I cringe when critics say it's their `best' record...for me `High N' Dry' will always blow it away in terms of pure metal enjoyment. But still ......don't ever stop rock rock or do it to me rock, rock you really move me....
AC/DC lite.
2009-11-10 - Quite possibly the most radio-friendly metal album ever made, "Pyromania" is a prime example of 80's pop metal (not to mention "AC/DC lite"): strong melodies, catchy riffs, and a lead singer who echoes Bon Scott. Producer Mutt Lange deserves much of the credit here, engineering the multi-layered vocals and thundering guitar atmospherics that saturate the record. Includes the classics "Rock of Ages" and of course "Photograph", both staples of rock radio. The cover art is now perhaps questionable in our post 9/11 world, although it perfectly reflects the album's contents and attitude. An 80's classic.
excellent album - time capsule of early 80s
2009-08-11 - This was a big album with some huge, arena rock hits. In my opinion, this too rock and rock production to a new level. For me, it is also the soundtrack of my life at the time. This album was made before all of the tragedies this band experienced and you can really tell these guys were young and hungry. Also, even though Mutt Lange did some great work with AC/DC and had had some success prior to this, he was in the same place. It is one of his best as well.
On a related note, I saw Def Leppard recently, in front of 10,000+ other people, and these songs still hold up today. Not only are the recordings here good, the songs are good as well, even when taken out of the context of this album.
I saw DL in concert....
2009-06-30 - Still love this cd! Saw these gents in concert at the Worcester Centrum and this brings it all back...
"I got something to say..."
2009-06-10 - Third of many albums in the Leppard discography that proves they are truly the greatest ROCK band in the whole world. It sounds a bit more polished...but it's still got the same raw energy as High n Dry. Not one bad song to be found on the album...But if you don't wanna pay for it, come June 23 you can have the copy I got now for free when I buy the deluxe edition coming out....heh heh heh ....do yourself a favor and get this album...you'll be held accountable for it if you don't come judgement day I promise you...
