Terrible dialog 
2009-11-22 - I'm not rating the movie. Most who read this know what it's about, or can read other reviews of the movie.
I'm rating the terrible audio. This movie was released in stereo, the DVD is mono. Not only is it mono, but all the dialog sounds like a very poorly dubbed foreign film. In every scene the dialog sounds like it was recorded later on a sound stage instead of during filming. Whether they're in the car driving down the road, or unloading at the hotel, voices sound the same. This makes the movie unwatchable for me. I waited too long to view it so I can't return it to Amazon.
Only buy this if you really like the movie and can overcome the dialog. Otherwise rent it or look for it on VHS maybe the VHS version doesn't suffer from the same problem.
Bad script, nice scenery 
2009-07-16 - I can't believe we were watching the same movie here. Apart from the gorgeous body of Michelle Johnson and the scenic shots of Rio there is very little to like about this flick. Michelle's acting is bad, the script is sophomorish, the audio is amateurish, and subject matter borders on disgusting.
As un-PC as they get. 
2009-03-12 - You've got to hand it to this "sophisticated comedy" from the 1980s -- it has the guts to go where very films would ever dare in portraying an all-too-possible disaster on a sundrenched holiday. It points out the contradiction that you go on these vacations for fun and relaxation, only to find the constrictions of social etiquette and morality pushed to their breaking point. Blame it on Rio might not connect the dots in all the right ways (probably because they knew they were playing with fire) but it's all there if you look.
As usual, Michael Caine is hilarious as an average middle-aged guy who falls for the siren song of a vapid, hardbodied little temptress... who also happens to be the teenaged daughter of his best friend. It's really not done in a creepy way and is in fact a very realistic situation that simply falls way outside of our accepted norms of behavior. Would I do it? No. But I can see it happening, particularly with a guy who is in a problematic marriage. Placing it in Rio was a great idea to show how a Westerner's morals just collapse, and The movie really doesn't shy away from the fallout of thinking with your loins instead of your brain. Having said that, the Caine character gets off pretty easy and the film dodges around to avoid some awkward resolutions and in the end somewhat condones his behavior if not its consequences. That's not so good.
But, this film is a lot more honest than the environment we find ourselves in now, in which very young girls now traipse about in what is the equivalent of hooker shoes and daisy dukes, where in 2009 sex literally is oozing out of commercials and billboards while most men just internalize it all and try their best to keep their view of women in the balance. This is a relatively honest film about the ridiculous hypocrisy our society creates in taunting something that is simply biological.
hmmm.. 
2008-11-10 - Three stars go toward the movie being really funny, but then its subject matter is a bit actually more than a bit disgusting!

2008-09-20 - It is hillarious. We saw it years ago and it is as funny as we remembered. We just loved Michael Caine and Joseph Bolonga. Their walk on the beach was great.
