Editorial Review:
The New York Times bestseller
One of America's most original and biting comic satirists, Denis Leary takes on all the poseurs, politicians, and pop culture icons who have sucked in public for far too long. Sparing no one, Leary zeroes in on the ridiculous wherever he finds it-his Irish Catholic upbringing, the folly of celebrity, the pressures of family life, and the great hypocrisy of politics-with the same bright, savage, and profane insight he brought to his critically acclaimed one-man shows No Cure for CancerLock 'n Load.
Proudly Irish-American, defiantly working class, with a reserve of compassion for the underdog and the overlooked, Leary delivers blistering diatribes that are both penetrating social commentary with no holds barred and laugh-out-loud funny. As always, Leary's impassioned comic perspective in Why We Suck is right on target.
Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid Reviews:
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
2009-12-20 - THE BOOK IS JUVENILE AND IMMATURE IN IT'S REPETITIVE USE OF FOUL LANGUAGE AND TRASHY SUBJECTS. I WILL EITHER THROW THE BOOK AWAY (ALONG WITH THE $ I WASTED ON IT) OR SHRED IT FOR A PAPER MACHE PROJECT. IT IS TOO OFFENSIVE TO PASS ON TO SOMEONE ELSE. I WILL BE SURE TO READ SEVERAL PAGES OF BOOKS BEFORE I BUY THEM IN THE FUTURE! IT ALSO IRRITATES ME THAT I HAVE TO GIVE IT A STAR IN ORDER TO POST A REVIEW.
A great Christmas gift for someone you don't like
2009-12-17 - I enjoy Leary's politically incorrect comedy. Unfortunately his new book is all political incorrectness and no comedy.
No Cure For Cancer was a classic. But his new book is simply not funny. Its as simple as that.
Leary is the last of the Bush bashers. A year into Obama, Leary is still bashing Bush. What he says about Bush may be true of course, but it shows how far Leary is reaching for material.
I have always wanted to write a review on Amazon, and now I have read a book that I dislike so much that I am taking the time to write a review.
Its sad to see Leary go out like this.
If you want to spend a few hours reading without cracking a smile, this book is for you.
Very Disappointing
2009-12-08 - I SO wanted to like this book. But wow what a boring, non-funny poorly written book. Oh, maybe I don't get the humor, some will say. There was little to get. The King has no clothes, really. This book just isn't funny and I feel pretty ripped off.
Ok but its getting a bit old.
2009-12-03 - To start off I really appreciate Leary's politically incorrect attitude. There are areas in this audio book that are really funny and spot on. Having said that though, parts of his act are getting a bit old. If you are a true fan on his work I think you will enjoy this book. The premise of the whole book is a bit thin, but it works for the most part. Hard to strongly recommend and hard to strongly say to avoid. It is just one of those books that turns out to be what you think it will be, kind of like going to Mcdonalds.
Not As Good As I'd Have Hoped...
2009-11-21 - I've been a fan of Denis Leary since "Rescue Me" premiered and was excited to see that he had written a book because his stand-up shows are so funny. Denis is a very intelligent guy and he can write very beautifully at times, however the book was written in a way that made it a bit difficult for me to read. A lot of it was done in a stream-of-consciousness style, with little punctuation and lots of run-on sentences that drove me sort of crazy. Then, there were passages with amazing imagery & language that I wished the entire book was written like. It's also not very well organized with subjects bleeding over into several chapters (I mean I hate kids too but do we really need like 3 chapters on them?) and it's mostly just griping. The title of the book gave me the impression that there would be lots of information on making changes that we can all implement in our lives to help the greater good, but the book was more of a bitch-fest than anything else. If you're not expecting a serious read and want a better glimpse into the mind of Dr. Leary, check this book out. If you're looking for a better-organized, well-thought-out book on what needs to change in this country, try "Somebody's Gotta Say It!" by Neal Boortz.
