Editorial Review:
This well-intentioned but strangely cold tale concerns an emotionally repressed Southern belle (Julia Roberts) who separates from her husband (Dennis Quaid) after discovering he is an unabashed philanderer. Pressed by her dominating father (Robert Duvall) into reconciling with her spouse, Roberts's character chafes against so much male control over her destiny. Defended by a fiercely independent sister (a catchy performance by Kyra Sedgwick), the heroine develops the nerve to plot her own course in life while her mother (Gena Rowlands) finds the gumption to throw her own mate out of the house. The script by Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise) is intelligent but hardly clear, and direction by Lasse Hallström (Once Around) can't keep Khouri's unfocused scenes and uncertain purpose from dissolving like sand castles in the rain. --Tom Keogh
Something to Talk About [Region 2] Reviews:
a marriage on the rocks
2009-05-24 - I'm a real Kyra Sedgwick fan, but this movie really doesn't do any of the actors a good turn. The plot is kind of silly about a rich girl's marriage to of all things a banker
while they are training horses for a riding show.
Just a pretty strange movie where father certainly doesn't know best.I think Randy Quad could have done as good as Dennis Quaid in this role
and might have been more believable?
Love this movie
2009-04-15 - What a great movie. It's funny, it's sad, and it has a little bit of everything in it. I've been looking for it in the stores, but since it's been out for a while, it's hard to find. I'm so glad Amazon had it. Thanks!
LOVE THIS MOVIE!
2009-03-23 - One of my all-time favorites. A story about how it all falls apart when the to-do list trumps actual living. A story of relationships - between a man and wife, between parents and their children, between siblings. This movie will make you laugh - Kyra Sedgwick's character has brutal honesty that could make even Miss Manners giggle. It is so easy to love the characters that you will cry right along with them. But in the end, you are left with a feeling of hope. When life falls apart, sometimes the hidden blessing is the opportunity to rebuild and become the person you always dreamed you'd be.
don't know what you mean
2009-03-19 - This is the third time I have been asked to review this product and each time I said that it was good and everything about it was good. Catherine Bevers It should be five stars not two as indicated on this review.
