Songs of Faith and Devotion Reviews:
Electronic spirituality.
2009-11-10 - A very spiritual album from the band that brought us the agnostic cynicism of "Blasphemous Rumours". Tracks like "Condemnation" and "Judas" were sure to alienate DM's more goth-oriented fanbase, and yet this LP is perhaps the band's most authentic and honest of all their recorded output. Dave Gahan's singing was never so brittle and emotional, and the dark electronica sound is pervasive as never before. The first single, "I Feel You", may have turned off potential buyers at the time, but a renewed listen now will reveal a very rewarding album from start to finish. Certainly one of their best in a long line of great albums.
My Second Favorite Depeche Mode CD!!
2009-09-01 - After "Violator" (My #1 Favorite DP CD) hit in late '89/early '90, I was rife and
ready to hear what they were going to come up with next!---Then in summer 1993
came "Songs Of Faith & Devotion", which had a much more darker and ominous vibe
to it than "Violator"(s) more upbeat futuristic vibe had.
I later found out that Dave Gahan, the lead singer was dealing with serious addictions
during this period that were jeopardizing everything that they had built from
1984's "Black Celebration" to "Violator"...hence the darker vibe I felt.
At first I didn't like it...I listened to it about 5 or 6 times, then relegated it
to my "hardly played" CD pile, where it stayed for about 8 yrs until 2001.
Then one day I was preparing to take a bunch of my old CD's to a swap-n-sell place
when I decided to give "S.O.F.& D." another spin with more mature ears.
Wouldn't you know it?---I had grown into it by then, and it has since become my
second favorite DP CD of their 25+ year catalogue!
I guess kind of like Billie Holiday and other great artists who've battled
addiction, Dave's voice was raw, weathered, and telling of the inner turmoil
he was experiencing at that time. (Thank goodness he got through it!)
But his voice has an otherworldly quality to it on this album, which I
like to say is like "If Edgar Allen Poe could've been a 90's rock star,
this is how his melancholy would've sounded!"
"Exciter", their 2001 return to great form, is my 3rd Favorite BTW!! (-:
I still love the vibe of "I Feel You", "Walkin In My Shoes", "Condemnation", "Judas"
and the others which escape me right now, but long story short...this is a damn good CD!
Partially prayed
2009-08-18 - 3 1/2
Some phenomenal synth-pop in their production stride here, taking liberties with various genres to create hauntingly pretty, lasting impressions that contrast dance and melodic sides nicely, though throughout the album generic dark-wave tendencies creep into too much of the process, making SOFAD simply good with sides of brilliance, rather than reversed.
Dave's best vocals to date...and sadly never again
2009-06-16 - This album was one of, if not, the best album ever put out by DM and the most underrated. Everything is perfect, almost every song is incredible. Martin's lyrics written for Dave's secret pleasures and pain, Alan's genius compositions, Dave's vocals cut are his best yet and cut through you with sheer, raw grit...every emotion bared for you to experience with him. Unfortunately, unlikely that we will ever experience him at this level again. Hard to replicate because this is Dave at his deepest, darkest moment and you can hear it in his voice. Luckily, he made it out and he has something magical that was produced and something we can cherish forever. This is a must for any DM fan and even for anyone sick of listening to the same commercialized crap on the radio. Also a must is the Devotional Concert on DVD. Dave's performance brings me to tears. This is a true artist and living rock god!
Stands the test of time
2009-05-07 - Since DM just came out with a new release (SOTU), I couldn't help but get the dust off some CDs of their previous work. Having run the majority of their set over the past week I believe Songs of Faith and Devotion is their best, or at least my favorite. Perhaps the strife within the band led to this brooding, dynamic set of tunes. The atmosphere of this album is incredible. It's an amazing listen, especially the remastered edition. It's been 16 years since it was first released and has stood the test of time. Play it on a good hi-fi system in the evening while enjoying a red wine- heaven on earth.
