Editorial Review:
Limited four disc (three CDs + DVD) edition of their 2009 album includes two 84 page books with lyrics and exclusive album and studio session photography. two exclusive enamel badges, poster and five artcards sealed in a collectors envelope with certificate of authenticity. Disc One is the Sounds Of The Universe album. Disc Two contains studio tracks not available on the album plus remixes. Disc Three includes demos from different stages of the band's career. The DVD contains behind the scenes footage on the making of the album, the video clip for 'Wrong' and more. Eclectic and energized, the band's new release is their most dazzling and diverse album in decades. Recorded in Santa Barbara and New York, Depeche Mode returned to using a lot of vintage gear, from analogue synthesizers to drum machines, in order to conjure up the retro-futuristic arrangements featured on the album. Lyrically the release contains many of the group's enduring obsessions plus more overt black humor than any of their previous collections. The release marks a reunion between the band and producer Ben Hillier, who worked with the band on Playing The Angel. Features the single 'Wrong'. Mute.
Sounds of the Universe Deluxe Box Set (3 CDs/DVD/2 Books) Reviews:
Silly Packaging - Good Music
2009-12-16 - I don't know about you, but I like storing my CD's and DVD's in the usual jewel box not a big 10x10 box that won't even fit on my shelves. Then they give you a flimsy cardboard disc cover with printing colors you can not read. It is even difficult to determine which disc is which. I don't know about you, but I am over 60 and don't need the other nonsense packaged with the disc.
The big box will be tossed out and I will find jewel boxes and print what is inside, but it's too bad to talk about this when the music is the main point. I like the music very much but have to redo the packaging - pretty silly, Have we not outgrown this Europe thing? I hope so.
Sounds of the Universe indeed!
2009-10-13 - Even better than I expected. I've been a Depeche fan for 25 years now and they still don't disappoint. This is probably because their song writing quality is always top notch and yet they manage to reinvent them selves a little bit on each album. Bonus tracks are superb! I was expecting the box set to be about the size of a double CD pack put it is actually 11x11x3 inches. A must for any Depeche mode fan.
DM Lover
2009-10-04 - This is a great product for DM lovers - has it all and the extra CDs are great.
A great gift for any Depeche Mode fan
2009-08-28 - The contents of the box and their quality is excellent....maybe even somewhat overboard. However, if you are looking for a special gift for anyone who loves Depeche Mode this would make an excellent choice. Keep it sealed or in pristine condition and it will probably be a collector's item one day.
I enjoy the selection of songs, but quite frankly I can't see this group ever topping Violator and, in my opinion, the songs in this set don't even come close. I ended up ripping the songs I like best (about seven) and putting them on a separate CD.
I bought this in a "knee-jerk" purchase decision off of a Gold Box Deal with the clock on the offer ticking after I had had a bit too much wine, and if I had it to do over again I would have just gone the route of buying the DVD/CDs on their own for a third the cost instead of the Deluxe Box Set. I don't really need nor care to own the books, poster, pins, etc. but I did decide to buy and do have them, so c'est la vie. For someone wanting all of these add-ons, though, I think it is worth the price and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you get. Again, great idea for that special gift.
I give it four stars out of five, taking one star off simply due to the fact that none of the songs really blew me away like quite a few of the ones off the Violator CD did. Neverthelss, great group, great collector's item.
Forever Our Universe
2009-06-30 - Whether you're an ole dedicated fan or recently hopped on the frequency wave, this box set is a 'must have' for your collection. It is an infinite evolution of Depeche Mode's musical artistry. I've had it playing as the soundtrack of my life since it arrived fresh in the box from Amazon. Whether I'm painting, rushing to see them live in Milan, or taking a ride with my best friend, their words have become mantras and forever inspiring. Owning the box set is like sharing a part of the vibration.
