Editorial Review:
One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, "Who's house?" Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, has yet to suss out that the key to a pop-R&B smash is hook and melody. With the exception of the now-played-out title track (Can we all take a moratorium on this mighty goddess theme for a second, please?) and the equally you-go-girlish "Independent Woman Part 1," most of the tracks here lack a strong core. Beyoncé crams a litany of thoughts and motifs into her mini-anthems, with samples ranging from Stevie Nicks to Tarzan Boy, but though the cuts sizzle and sparkle and throw off much attitude, Survivor is way too frenetic. Even with some strong singing and songs (most notably the laid back "Fancy"), Survivor lacks real emotion. --Amy Linden
Survivor Reviews:
The girls can sing, but...
2008-02-03 - I still only like 3 songs on this whole album...Independent Woman, part 1, Survivor, and the gospel medley. Oh, Emotions wasn't so bad either. I honestly just wasn't into the rest of the songs on this album. But I didn't waste too much money since I bought it used for 40 cents and now I have my favorite songs on my MP3 player.
So, if you asked me would I buy it new, I'd tell you no. And that's my two cents.
Lukewarm release...
2007-10-17 - There are good songs here (Emotion, Happy Face) and a little fun to be had (Bootylicious, Nasty Girl, Independent Woman Pt. I and II) but the rest lacks any significant depth. Brown Eyes is one of the WORST songs that they've put out EVER (it's mushier than any of Mariah Carey's old-school ballads; trust me - I'm VERY familiar with those!) and Apple Pie La Mode as well as the outro were pretty pointless.
This release doesn't come close to the material released on The Writing's On The Wall ('99).
Glad I own it for the stand out tracks, but won't be listening to it again anytime soon!

didnt care for it
2007-07-31 - as much as i love destiny's child i will have to say this is their worst album! well to me all of the albums released in the "survivor era" sucked.....like for instance the christmas album was horrible i was expecting christmas songs that made your feel warm and jolly inside and instead it was just them harmonizing over beats that shouldnt have been on there...and around the survivor time i felt like beyonce was over doing her ad-libs and it was very unflattering and nerve-wreaking! i tried so hard to like this album but i juss cant do it my absolute fav. is destiny fufilled i wish they would have released more albums in that caliber alot often but yea if i were you i would not buy this! unless you are just a big DC fan like myself and just have to get your hands on it to complete your DC collection...but to me this album as a whole sounds like they recorded it in a toy factory or something...seriously because the beats are wack and all you hear is clinking and booms and wretch sounds and things of that sort so it reminds me of a toy factory or some kind of mechanic shop and their harmonies were more dull(i hated beyonce most at this time because all she did was repeat words in repition to make it seem like she was a great singer and she sang almost every note in the same key i sooooo hated her voice around this time i guess it was maturing a bit...but i'm glad she grew out of it...for awhile i guess that is because she sang so beautifully on her 1st album "dangerously in love" and on the destiny fufilled album but lately with her newest album B'Day....she does too much screaming and yelling instead of singing it would have been nice i guess if there were alot more ballads) and all you can hear is beyonce....i think either she does all of the choruses alone or either they turn down kelly's and michelle's mics.....you can hear kelly juss a tad bit if you listen closely because in a way her and beyonce's voices are a bit the same as far as tone goes...its just that kelly's voice is more light-hearted to me...the worst song would have to be independent woman part 2....and the production seemed overworked and disney channel friendly like on "nasty girl" there is a little cooing you hear that is irritating as hell.....a total waste and its hard to believe that this album heightened their success to its peek
2 1/2 Stars... What a Mess
2007-03-09 - Right away, I will say that this album is a hot mess. This album has nothing but fillers and if it wasn't for the turmoil from the original lineup this horrible album wouldn've ever surfaced. For the exception of "Survivor", "Independent Women Part I, "Brown Eyes", and "Dangerously In Love" the rest is horrible. If you don't have this album, download it instead or you'll be disappointed.
not able to put it on my MP3 because of security code
