A Tribute to Ethel Waters Reviews:
If you yearn for the days of Big Beautiful Sound 5 Star Review
2006-03-31 - Miss Carroll's beauty and brilliance screams out from this CD. The best part for me is being able to enjoy her voice with such masterful musicians accompanying her. It seems to me that such albums are rare. I am so glad that I was able to purchase a copy. It is worth so very much more than the few dollars that I paid for it.

the crown jewel of my music collection 5 Star Review
2002-04-01 - less than 800 copies of the original LP were sold? then i'm one proud owner. & what a beautifully crafted album it was!

this IS the CD that i yearned for. i mean, it was digitally recorded back when nobody knew what that meant (CDs were still about 5 years out). it was... & still is... so clean... brimming with "air" & "juice" like no other album i'd previously heard.

if anyone could find fault with it, then maybe it's a bit "in your face," as in, "let's show off this new toy." digital recording was still to find it's subtlety, after all.

but i'm not finding fault. in fact, imagine placing your ruby red slipper at the very beginning of the "digital" yellow brick road. your toe would be touching this album.

thank you, Diahann(!)... Mercer... Mr Miller... & all involved.

cricket rests.

This is a very rare find for Blues fans and the Audiophile. 5 Star Review
1999-01-31 - Take the magnificent voice and masterful interpretations Of Diahann Carroll, combine them with the Duke Ellington Orchestra.....The result achieves the very highest level of excellence. It seems that Diahann missed her calling, as she performs the blues superbly. As an avid blues and jazz fan, this recording is the prize of my collection. It is very rare to find a recording of 1930's style blues of this quality, both the performance and the clarity of the recording. Also of interest with this album is that it was originally recorded as a "digital master disc" and released as a certified limited edition by Orinda records in 1978 (less than 800 copies were sold). This was one of the very first digitally mastered recordings. This technology was used just after direct discs that were recorded in the mid 70's.
