Editorial Review:
As the song goes, "Merry Christmas" has already "been said many times, many ways." Diana Krall's Christmas Songs is a worthy--though not particularly unique--addition to the holiday catalog. On it, she excels with an approach mastered long ago: elegant delivery that gives extra polish to a very familiar lineup. Some might find her style frosty at times, but that will come as a relief to those who want their carolers to cut through some of the holiday treacle and create a festive, yet grown-up vibe. And Krall does show off her playful side with little, personal touches. In "Winter Wonderland" she promises to "frolic and play the Canadian way," which should draw smiles from her native land. (That'll mean toasting the holiday with Molson, eh?) Elsewhere, she ends "Jingle Bells" with the girlishly giddy statement, "I'm just crazy about horses." Well…can't argue with that. --Leah Weathersby
Diana Krall Christmas Songs Reviews:
Great price for an amazing collection
2009-12-15 - These are the some of the most beautiful Christmas Classics that are there. I am not even Christian, but I love listening to them, the music transcends religion. Thank you Amazon!.
Perfect for Christmas
2009-11-29 - I love Diana's voice and to have her ring in the Christmas season has been pure joy!
Jazzy Christmas album of mainly familiar songs
2009-09-08 - For this album, Diana chose to vary the tempo by including some bouncy songs as well as the ballads that she has tended to focus on in her more recent albums. There are no original songs here, but two songs (Christmas time is here, Count your blessings instead of sheep) are rarely recorded compared to the other songs featured.
Another notable feature of this album is that it focuses exclusively on the festive aspects of Christmas. You won't find any songs about Jesus here, so people of all religions and none can enjoy this album. That makes this a rarity among Christmas albums, since the vast majority include at least one song about Jesus.
Diana and her musicians open the album with a distinctive arrangement of Jingle bells. She follows it with another up-tempo song, Let it snow let it snow let it snow, which includes a long instrumental break that allows the musicians (including Diana on piano solo) to show their talents. The remaining tracks are ballads except for Winter wonderland, Santa Claus is coming to town and Sleigh ride, all of which are performed either mid-tempo or up-tempo. Among the ballads, my favorite is Christmas time is here, perhaps because I don't hear it very often.
This is a wonderful Christmas album that will appeal to those who like to hear Diana singing ballads, but which also reminds us of Diana's jazz roots.
More Ho-Hum Than Ho-Ho-Ho.
2009-08-04 - I'll be brief: Diana Krall has become the vanilla ice cream of the jazz world. Granted, her music is occasionally very good -- at times, even gourmet -- but vanilla, it is...and has been for some time now.
This holiday money grab is yet another example.
IMO, there are three standout tracks -- ones in which she breathed a little life into otherwise over-recorded tunes -- Christmas Time Is Here, White Christmas and Winter Wonderland. The others are just as you'd imagine they are...across-the-plate, perfectly fine, unspectacular DK.
Perhaps she is to be forgiven on this one; after all, this is her holiday season CD -- the one she wants you to put in your heavy rotation for years to come. Maybe that's why she put such a "provocative" photo of herself on the cover...because frankly, there isn't enough music on the enclosed disc to justify purchasing the whole thing. But wow, Mrs. DK MacManus certainly is one holiday hottie, right?
It's a shame that someone with her chops (vocally and on the keys) has to resort to such measures to get our attention during the most wonderful time of the year. It's even more of a shame that Verve would dare put her in that position just to sell a few extra copies.
Buy This!
2009-01-31 - Diana Krall is amazing. She can do nothing wrong. I own many, many holiday C/D's but this is one of the first c/d's I will play.
