The first-ever live concert recording from Grammy winning vocalist/pianist Diana Krall, recorded at the Paris Olympia Theatre winter 2002. Here finally, captured in amazing audio quality, is an album showcasing the magic of Krall's concert performances. Krall & her band - perform some of the tunes from Krall's studio recordings, such as 'East of the Sun (West of the Moon)' & 'Devil May Care'. Joined by special guests John Pisano (acoustic guitar) & Paulinho DaCosta (percussion) for several tracks, including the Gershwin's 'S'wonderful'. The Orchestre Symphonique European, conducted by Alan Broadbent with special guest conductor Claus Ogerman, is featured on the upbeat 'Let's Fall in Love' & a haunting interpretation of 'I've Got You
Description of Live in Paris:
Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future.--Eugene Holley Jr.
Live in Paris Reviews:
Smokey Retro Voice and Songs
2009-12-08 - I forget where I discovered this amazing performer...but I am so glad I did! It is fun to listen to her own unique interpretation of some old jazzy standards. And her voice reminds me of being in a night club in the 40's (at least from what I can tell from the movies!)
The gargling never ends
2009-10-02 - I have to join those reviewers who have stated very accurately, she can not sing. She can play jazz piano well and that's about it. I don't know why she's so popular ... I think it has something to do with ambition, luck and excelling in the art of kiss & tell. She sings like she gargles mouthwash, maybe this is why she's married to a guy who sounds severely constipated.
The tracks on this cd are uneven in recording quality - like they were cut from different sessions. I have lot of respect for Doug Sax who remastered this album accurately capturing the instruments but the vocal performances & arrangements are for the dogs who are all howling in protest.
Previous reviewer justifiably compared her to Tony Benett as in seriously over-rated shouting as opposed to seriously over-rated gargling which never ends.
My first album - but it is the best
2009-09-20 - I hate to admit, but I have only recently started collecting Ms. Krall's albums. I have listened online to several of hers, though, and this is probably her finest. Her style speaks for herself, and you can sense her sophistication in her renditions. I am listening to it over and over. While I have other jazz albums, this ranks as one of my favorites.
Diana Lively
2009-06-27 - Beautiful use of audience energy which is incorporated in a way that doesn't detract from the music. It gives the feeling you're there.
Several of the tracks highlight at least one of her band's instruments which adds to the "show" quality.
One Album I Never Get Tired Of
2009-02-23 - Lucky me, this was my introduction to Diana Krall, and to be honest, none of her other albums have surpassed this one in quality in my opinion.
These are primarily jazz standards and very singable. I find myself belting them out every time I listen to it.
I'm not normally a fan of live albums, I only know of one other that is fantastic, but I love, love, love this album!
I don't see how anyone who loves jazz could possibly be disappointed.
