Editorial Review:
A decade ago, country acts who sounded more like arena rockers gained hegemony on a Music Row that scorned the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack as a fluke. As in the past, many there couldn't see the forest for the trees. Both Bentley's own rootsy self-titled debut and Gretchen Wilson's Here for the Party prove quality modern traditionalism still sells. Bentley's sophomore album offers more straight-ahead amalgams of bluegrass, '60s Bakersfield, and raw barroom fare like the Waylonesque "Got a Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" and the beer-guzzling anthem "Domestic, Light, and Cold." He shows real depth on the sensual "Come a Little Closer." The moving, timeless "Gonna Get There Someday," a tale of a son at his mother's grave vowing to make something of himself, easily trumps the album's cliché-ridden title song, as does his fetching treatment of friend Del McCoury's "Good Man Like Me," recorded with McCoury's band. Bentley's lack of artifice proves his greatest strength. Again. --Rich Kienzle
Modern Day Drifter Reviews:
Great CD condition
2009-04-06 - the CD itself and timing of arrival where great. However, one corner of the original CD case was broken but that could have been a shipping problem.
Not impressed.
2008-11-02 - I decided to give Mr. Bentley a try and buy his cd. I knew the popular songs from the radio (Lot of Leavin' Left to Do, Come a Little Closer, Settle for a Slowdown). However, besides those songs I didn't care for this album. I would recommend downloading the songs by themselves rather than the entire album.
Lay You Down
2008-09-25 - I picked up this CD @ a $2 sale and see there are copies available for under a buck. I'd never heard this artist before; so "Modern Day Drifter" is my introduction. The opener "Lot of Leavin' Left to Do" is a peppy rocker. "Come a Little Closer" is my favorite track, a nice romantic slow track as Bentley croons, "I feel like layin' you down." "Settle for a Sundown" is another slow song where Bentley seems to connect with the emotional lyric, "I held on longer than I should." Bentley takes Jamie Hartford's "Good Things Happen" and again excels on the slower tempo song where he can get into the lyric. "So So Long" picks up the tempo with Bentley's vocals containing enough sass to suit a jilted lover. Bentley teams successfully with the Del McCoury Band on "Good Man Like Me" that infuses the track with some energy. The strength of the CD is that Bentley has great instrumental backing from his band. Weaknesses include a little over half of the album is slow. Much of the songwriting lacks a distinctive sense of melody. Two of the more lively tracks, "Cab of My Truck" & "Domestic, Light & Cold" sound like about 20 other Nashville singers. This is nice background music, but fails to inspire me to look for his other releases. When I'm in this musical mood, I'll probably spin Keith Urban. Taxi!
Good Modern Country
2008-09-02 - The songs are good and enjoyable. It is good modern country. I think he is getting better with each album.
Solid album, worth every penny.
2007-11-07 - I rarely give anything 5 stars. I bought this thinking this artist was another "pretty boy" of new-country.
How wrong I was.
For certain, there are your drinking songs and your party songs, but
what sets this record apart from contemporary offerings of other artists is the sincere homage to "real country", while presenting it in modern terms.
There is not a bad song on the record, and "Gonna Get There Someday" is as sincere and powerful as any recording I have heard. Buy this.
