Editorial Review:

Elvis has left the building . . . and his shoes have followed suit!

No holiday in tiny Salt Lick, Texas, is more revered than January 8th—Elvis's birthday! To commemorate the grand occasion, Hogg's Drive-In—where the King enjoyed many a burger on the road to fame and fortune—is displaying an “actual” pair of Elvis's blue suede shoes. That is, until some heel without a soul swipes them right out of their display case.

Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin—the shoe-loving Domestic Equalizers—are shocked that someone would perpetrate such a dastardly crime. So the plucky detecting duo agrees to help the town's inept sheriff track down the royal blue loafers. And being majestic multitaskers, the ladies might even be able to squeeze in some matchmaking as well.

Mix-ups, mayhem, the threat of gunplay, and shocking octogenarian secrets revealed—it's all in a day's work for the Domestic Equalizers, the two best friends whose motto is: Don't get mad . . . get evidence!

Curing the Blues with a New Pair of Shoes Reviews:
Don't mess with Texas...or Elvis, for that matter... 3 Star Review
2009-09-21 - The tiny town of Salt Lick, Texas is hosting a 3-day celebration in honor of Elvis's birthday. Legend has it that the late singer enjoyed many a burger at Hogg's Drive-in and the locals take a great deal of pride in their tenuous connection to "The King". When a pair of Elvis's blue seude shoes (on loan from a museum in Vegas) are stolen, the sheriff turns to the Domestic Equalizers for help. Debbie Sue (former rodeo champion, current hairdresser, and wanna-be private detective) and her best friend, Edwina, vow to find the missing shoes...in between styling hair and playing matchmaker to a pair of visiting reporters from rival papers.

This book doesn't offer much (sorry!) and I had to force myself to finish it. The premise could have been cute and played for a few laughs but was never developed. The focus is the relationship between the two reporters - Sam and Avery. Avery is referred to as having the looks of Faith Hill...with the brains of an Ant Hill. With an eye-roll inducing "heroine" I couldn't maintain any interest in the Romance storyline. The characters of Debbie Sue and Edwina ( who have been so engaging in other books in this series ) are reduced to supporting roles and except for Edwina's trade-mark "smart mouth" they are lifeless and dull.

The book was somewhat redeemed by it's quirky ending and there is some humor and lots of silliness if you're looking for that type of escape. By far the best part of this book was the 'Author Insights' section at the end containing Texas/Elvis trivia and a recipe. Personally, I would recommend you get this from the library - your $14 would be better spent on an Elvis CD or some good Texas-style Barbeque.

Contains some mild sexual language and a generous helping of profanity.

If it's a Dixie Cash book, you're in for a fun read 5 Star Review
2009-09-12 - Once again, the gals from Salt Lick, Texas are on an adventure -- this time to find Elvis' missing blue suede shoes. Since it was a loan from a hotshot in Vegas, it's urgent that the purloined shoes are found.

What I really like is that at the back of each of the Dixie Cash books, the authors insert recipes that are from the west Texas area; an advice column that is hysterical and other little tidbits.

My only problem with a Dixie Cash book is that I end up talking with a west Texan accent for a day or so after reading the books. It leaves my husband a bit befuddled...but my daughters understand why.

Foolishness 1 Star Review
2009-08-27 - Questionable "facts," flimsy plot, foolishness and smutty language equal garbage IMHO. I'm sorry I wasted my money and my time, only to be insulted after a few pages.

amusing gumshoe cozy 4 Star Review
2009-07-25 - Salt Lick, Texas is proud to host an Elvis gala as the singer remains popular though he died four decades ago. This year the townsfolk are especially excited because the legendary blue suede shoes that their hero wore when he sang the tune is going to be on exhibit.

However, the valuable relic vanishes to the shock of the locals. Nobody steps on their Elvis and gets away with it so the Domestic Equalizers (when they are not styling hair), Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin investigate seeking who is wearing blue suede shoes. Not long afterward, the pair replaces the missing artifact with ancient slippers belonging to Ed's husband, who they assume will believe he misplaced them. They try to contact Adolf Sielvami, Keeper for the King Museum in Las Vegas, who sent the shoes, but he and his shrine apparently do not exist.

With another gumshoe cozy (see DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE BETWEEN ME AND MY SHOES) in between matchmaking of reporters and preparing for the Elvis horde invasion, Debbie Sue and Edwinna have plenty to do while Ed searches for his missing slippers. Lighthearted fun, Dixie cash pays homage to Elvis while gently mocking fanatics who sight the "King" in every fast food joint in the country and treat anything he touched as a precious artifact. With a nod to Chaucer's The Pardoner's Tale, fans will laugh out loud at the latest escapades of the Texas cowgirls.
