Dysfunctional Reviews:
The best Dokken album
2009-08-13 - OK, I was a huge Dokken fan in the 80s.
I can see where some fans might be disappointed in this record if they were looking for the "classic" 80s Dokken sound when the band reunited after a 6 year break up to make this album and release it in 1995. As much as I love the 80s stuff, "Dysfunctional" shows a different, more mature Dokken. And, this album is far better than any record they've released since.
Everyone will have their own taste/opinion, and here's mine: This is the greatest record Dokken ever wrote and recorded.
This is one of those records that took a few listens- as well as reading/studying the lyrics in the CD booklet. There were some songs, like Sweet Chains and Shadows of Life, that took a few listens but grew on me.
As Jeff Pilson said on the live video/DVD that followed in 96, Don wanted to make sure every single word of every song on this record was from the heart.
The album is from the heart. It is dark and definitely I connect with it.
This record is a masterpiece which still holds up after almost 15 years. I love every song and this album has changed my life. Standout tracks include The Maze, Long Way Home, Too High to Fly, and From the Beginning. If you really want to hear an awesome song, get the Japanese version of this album which includes a bonus track, "If the Good Die Young" - which is one of my favorite Dokken songs.
I place this album in the top 10 best records ever made by any rock and roll band.
disfunctional describes this mess
2009-02-28 - Words cannot describe how much this SUCKS, but I will try. This is Dokken trying (and failing) to be a grunge band. This is a completely different band sound from the Tooth and Nail or Lock and Key era. It is Dokken doing a pale, pale as Don's skin, pale imitation of Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains. This is not why I buy Dokken albums. But the songs tell the story:
Inside Looking Out-Dokken's position relative to the grunge movement.
Hole In My Head-describes anyone thinking this is good as 1980's Dokken
The Maze-Dokken lost trying to find a style band wagon to jump on.
Too High To Fly-quite possibly the longest, most boring song ever recorded. It just repeats the title over and over and over again for what seems like 20 minutes. You just keep wishing it would end.
Nothing Left To Say-but Dokken keeps on doing crap grunge albums
Shadows Of Life-pale shadow of former band, even George's solos suck
Long Way Home-especially if headed in the wrong direction, like Dokken
Sweet Chains-stupid title, stupid song
Lesser Of Two Evils-Don or George, who sucks here most?
What Price-A dollar, anyone paying more paid too high a price.
From The Beginning-let me repeat, this is grunge lite by a washed up hair band, it just plain sucks.
Not as bad as I thought. It grows on you.
2008-06-05 - Dokken was one of my favorite 80's L.A. bands and, in my opinion, was more talented then some of the other L.A. bands like Poison and Warrant who had more initial success than they did. I picked up this album when it came out and, frankly, was not very impressed. I really tried to like it but eventually wound up getting rid of it. I recently picked up the new Dokken cd, Lightning Strikes again, which is the first Dokken cd I had picked up in almost a decade, and was really impressed. It's easily their best album since Back For The Attack. I wanted more and decided to give this cd another try and guess what? It's pretty good. It has a different style compared to their 80's stuff and there are no blazing Lynch solos, but it is overall a good album, a little bluesy with a tint of jazz. If I had to compare it to any previous Dokken album, I would say it is closest to Breaking the Chains. Maybe I just needed to mellow out a little more to enjoy this album compared to when it was originally released, but I think it is definitely worth picking up. Overall, all the Dokken albums are good except Shadowlife, which completely sucks and the band does not even acknowledge it. It was so bad that is caused George to leave the band.
Dokken -The 5th studio album
2007-07-06 - I have to say that this was not a wonderful ablum as others were from years past, but it wasnt absolute garbage either. None of the songs on here are as enjoyable as 'Just got lucky' or 'dream warriors' and seem to me that they are lacking a very important element and that being energy. I know it has a lot to do with the 90's influence and the disbanding of the guys but I still dont think that should be an excuse. But on the positive side there truly are 3 solid and good songs on here including 'shadows of life', 'Too high to fly', and 'The maze'. Each song is tolerable and good in its own sense and I think that there is a possibility it could grow on me. But it did saden me because I really am a hard core dokken fan and I knew Don and the guys were capable of a better record.
Dokken's Best CD
2007-01-01 - I realize that I am 12 years late in writing a review of this album, but I thought it was worth my review. Dokken has been and always will be my favorite band. Collecting all the albums and listening to them countless times hopefully gives my review some crudentials. I like the overall heaviness of this cd, lots of great grooves, great lyrical hooks, and great melodies. I think what really stands out on this album is Jeff Pilson. This is the first Dokken cd that you can REALLY hear the bass. It was always there in the background on the other albums, but it really stands out on this cd. Also Pilson's backround vocals really shine on this as well. Another thing I like about this album is that they took there songwriting to another direction. Most of Dokken's lyrics are about love and broken love. Think of all their singles/videos and the word "love" is in 80% of them. If you are a casual fan looking to get into Dokken discs, my suggestions would be 1)Dysfunctional 2)Tooth and Nail 3)Hell to Pay and 4)Back for the Attack, I look forward to "Lightning Strikes Again" which should be in 2007. The Lynch/Pilson cd is excellent as well and worth the money.
