Description of Images and Words:
Proof positive that one can be a virtuoso musician and also have heart, Dream Theater are in impressive form on this album, arguably their best. They do it by never allowing technical flash to overwhelm their songs; there's substance under the style, in the form of ear-catching riffs and aggressive rhythms. The opening "Pull Me Under" is, quite simply, a great song, from its sparse introduction to its heavy-duty main riff to its memorable lyrics. Dream Theater, as its name implies, is an introspective band, exploring the complexities of the human heart and bringing them to life with songs like "Learning to Live," "Take the Time," and "Wait for Sleep". Unlike many metal bands, they favor an optimistic outlook, as with "Another Day" and "Surrounded," and even the dazzlingly complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1" is an entertaining listen. -- Genevieve Williams

Best Dream Theater recording!!
2009-11-02 - Dream Theater is my favourite band and this is the first progressive album I ever listened to. So the equation is resolved, this is the best metal album for me, as I am a true progressive fan.. What can I say? A masterpiece in his genre for sure, and a very great album to listen whatever you appreciate progressive style.
Higly and deeply recommended to all!
One of my top 10 favorite cds ever made
2009-10-07 - First let me start by saying that I'm not a huge fan of this band. I've bought several of their albums since I first purchased Images and Words, their first cd, and didn't care much for any of them. They now sit at the bottom of my 600 cd collection. I purchased this cd the week it came out after seeing them on headbanger's ball, the only time they ever played them on that show and fell in love with it. Pull Me Under is one of my favorite songs, it is dark and beautiful, mysterious and excellent. The rest of the cd isn't as good as the first track but still every song is well done. Track 5 is my 2nd favorite song. This cd is also very long, well over an hour, so you get your monies worth there too. If you have any interest in checking this band out, get this cd, it is their best work.
DT's best
2009-09-25 - This album is DT's best.
"Pull Me Under" is a great opening number, and perhaps the best constructed song in their whole catalog.
"Surrounded" is my favorite on this album, with its optimistic yet edgy flavor, with a mellow opening and closing. Other standouts are "Metropolis, Pt. 1" & "Learning to Live".
Also, LaBrie really sings this album well, probably his best DT performance, as he shows off his range without taking away from the songs. The real quality of his voice, though, can be heard and felt on the mellow "Wait for Sleep".
The only song I can't really get into is "Take the Time" ... not a bad song, just didn't click with me.
Primarily an instructional CD
2009-07-05 - I just didn't get it. Primarily a display of technique with little musical content. The score of this music would be good technique development material for students of the various instruments used on this album.
After a few listens I gave this CD away.
