Editorial Review:
Clever and often funny, My Date with Drew is a kind of slapdash excuse for a documentary feature, albeit one with a few surprises. A 27-year-old aspiring filmmaker, Brian Herzlinger, wins $1,100 on a game show (where the winning answer happened to be "Drew Barrymore"), and decides to use it to make a film about his aspiration to ask Barrymore out on a date. Enlisting a few eager and bemused producers and directors as allies, Herzlinger goes through a self-improvement campaign--exercising, finding out what Barrymore likes--while also interviewing people who know her, including actor Eric Roberts and Charlie's Angels co-screenwriter John August. The tricky part, of course, is not giving anyone the impression that Herzlinger is just a sophisticated stalker, especially when he's busy wrangling invitations to celebrity parties so he can get near the object of his lifelong crush. The film runs a little low on steam in its second half, and the suggestion that the movie is really about the beautiful pursuit of a worthwhile dream, and not just a first-feature gimmick, gets a little precious. But My Date with Drew is certainly worth seeing for its conclusion. --Tom Keogh
My Date with Drew Reviews:
A fun and enjoyable experience
2009-09-21 - While struggling to be an actor, a guy tries to live out his fantasy - and succeeds... an interesting movie that follows the adventure. Quite fun and entertaining.
Sweet little movie...
2009-06-29 - I watched this tonight... it was a cute, quirky little documentary about this guy who has had a crush on Drew Barrymore since he was 10. He decides, after winning $1100 on a game show, to try to get a date with her. A feel good film, you actually feel bad for the dude (he's actually kind of annoying at times, if I'm being honest). But you gotta hand it to him for going for it, ya know?
Does he get the date?... not gonna tell you that part, you gotta watch it yourself!
for kids and dreamers
2009-06-23 - let me begin by saying, i am no sap. i don't like romance comedies & i don't have grand dreams about how my future wedding should look.
with that said, anyone giving this less than 4 stars is obviously heartless. this is the movie kids 8 through 80 need to watch to know it's ok to pursue a dream. it will give you the inspiration to go for it.
and for all the reviewers calling him a 'stalker'...i noticed they were all guys, by the way- you are probably just jealous, and if it's not jealousy, then i feel sorry for you bc you couldn't see something beautiful in this film.
Fun to watch Brian's journey to date Drew
2009-05-06 - I really enjoyed this home movie of Brian's date with Drew. This documentary is like anyone of us making a movie with a tight budget. The ending is great, and Brian's excitment to have his date with Barrymore almost brings tears to your eyes.I would just like to know what happened to one of his friends in the film that died? That was very sad to see when I was reading the credits at the end.
HEARTWARMING DOCUMENTARY
2008-08-15 - This documentary is very original, heartwarming and creative. All true, aspiring film maker Brian Herzlinger has a huge crush on Drew Barrymore and decides to take the winnings he got from a game show, use it as a budget, and gives himself 30 days to get a date with Drew.
A project such as this could be very tacky but the sincerity of his quest carries this whole film. Brian is a charming, regular guy and the lengths to which he goes to work through people who know Drew is often hilarious. As the film goes on you get so caught up in his venture you can't help but imagine yourself working to make a dream come true.
You must watch through this whole thing to encounter the last 30 minutes that will put you on an emotional roller coaster. I actually cried with this documentary !! The payoff at the end will fill your heart.
Original, daring, creative and filled with heart this documentary is a must for anyone who has a dream that could possibly be within reach but fear holds you back. It also shows there is still pure honest goodness in this world and to find moments of happiness are worth the journey.
Kudos to Brian.
