Editorial Review:
Dwight Yoakam occupies a singular position in contemporary country. No artist has better balanced mainstream commercial success with artistic, alt-country credibility, while somehow managing to embody both the music's most traditional and its most progressive impulses. Blame the Vain marks a milestone for Yoakam as his first self-produced effort since splitting with producer/guitarist/bandleader Pete Anderson. While the material seems to document the end of a relationship and the hope for romantic renewal, there's a freewheeling playfulness to the arrangements--the bongo-driven, rock & roll urgency of "International Heartache," the faux British accent and synthesizer intro on "She'll Remember," the shifting time signatures of "Watch Out." The tear-in-your-beer balladry of "Lucky That Way" and "Does It Show" should satisfy those who take their honky-tonk straight, no chaser, while the homage paid to timeless Roy Orbison ("Just Passin' Time"), early Johnny Cash ("I'll Pretend") and later Elvis Presley ("When I First Came Here") attests to the range and richness of Yoakam's artistry. He may no longer have the hits like he once did, but he hasn't lost the vision. --Don McLeese

Blame the Vain Reviews:
Blame the Vain 5 Star Review
2009-11-11 - I think this is one of Dwight's best albums..every cut is awesome! He is so multifaceted with his ability to sing any genre of music.

High standards, as usual 5 Star Review
2009-11-01 - Has Dwight Yoakam ever laid an egg? Not that I know of. And this recent production is no exception. He experiments with a little production fiddle-faddle on a few songs, with some sound effects and weird sounds etc. But all the great tunes soon settle into that classic Yoakam sound. The lyrics are top notch. Add this one to your Dwight Yoakam shelf without fear.

His best work 5 Star Review
2009-01-30 - This album never got much air time on the country stations, which is a real shame, because it is one of Dwight's very best albums. It has a very fresh, very edgy sound, which goes beyond his prior music. To me, the stand-out tune on this one is "Intentional Heartache", which mixes somewhat tongue-in-cheek revenge sound lyrics with a driving beat and a very compelling sound. This is the album that I have listened to the most of all of Dwight's work; it is fabulous.

LOving it as usual 5 Star Review
2008-01-11 - Had some very nice songs on here...
I recommend this album all the way
Nice picture also

I can't get this CD out of my car! 5 Star Review
2007-08-23 - I never thought of myself as a Dwight Yoakam fan, but I loved the song and video for Intentional Heartache. I finally bought this CD, my first Dwight Yoakam purchase. It will NOT be my last. I have had this CD in my rotation for several weeks. I never tire of it and today I played The Last Heart to Know about 5 times straight. It's just hauntingly beautiful. This guy has incomparable talent and is a true original. I now count myself as one of his diehard fans! Rock on!
