Porcupine Reviews:
their best...nothing transitional here! TRANSCENDENTAL, yes 5 Star Review
2008-08-02 - this album conjures and invokes senses and forces of the himalayas...Shankar's touch adds weird urgency to the swirling sometimes despondent (and quite existential) mix.

this is essential echo...and very much like the Banshees after they did JUJU, they realized they opened up something...i think they went one more step (a bit artier) with Ocean Rain.

but this is simply by far their best.

a challenging album for all emotions.

One More 80's Classic. 5 Star Review
2008-04-06 - I bought "Porcupine" right after "Songs to Learn and Sing".I confess that i felt a bit desapointed on my first listening but after some tries the songs started to be more and more seductive. This reissue is great. The booklet full of photos + bonus tracks are an pleasant surprise(even with the out of date mix version of "Never Stop")

It's the one with "The Cutter" on it 4 Star Review
2008-03-27 - I mainly bought this because I really like the song "The Cutter" but haven't heard much else from this group besides the song they contributed to the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. While I wouldn't say this is a "great" album, it is a pretty good representative of its genre: ecclectic 1980s pop music. A few songs stand out (Cutter, Clay, Heads will roll) and there's a nice Arabic sounding theme that runs through many of the compositions which gives the album a nice exotic edge. Worth listening if you get the chance, but based on other reviews here, this isn't their best album so maybe it's not a good place to start if you're just starting to explore this band.

Porcupines got a few 3 Star Review
2007-02-15 - Few Highlites here, "Cutter", "The Back Of Love"...More keyboards and Lots of Shankar's Strings...Not as good as Crocodiles. First Timer to the Bunnymen? Go Crocodiles.

Continued Brilliance 4 Star Review
2007-01-19 - Before the release of "Porcupine", Echo & the Bunnymen had already come out with two brilliant albums: "Crocodiles" and "Heaven Up Here". "Porcupine", their 3rd album, would be an additional testament to their unique style and ability to continually go in new directions.

This album reminds me of a movie soundtrack. I attribute this to heavier instrumentation (including the addition of strings from L. Shankar), longer songs, vivid lyrics, and echoed vocals. "Heaven Up Here" is a great album to listen to all the way through, despite the lack of memorable songs. However, "Porcupine" (like "Crocodiles") is both enjoyable as an entire album and is mostly composed of very, very good songs. The biggest difference between this album and its predecessors is that it doesn't sound nearly as raw. The making of "Porcupine" was obviously a well-planned endeavor, as all of the songs are layered with both slight and stark changes in song production and editing. This difference is not necessarily a drawback; it's just yet another side of a complex and interesting band.

This re-mastered edition includes seven extra tracks: one B-side ("Fuel"), five alternate versions ("The Cutter", "My White Devil", "Porcupine", "Ripeness", and "Gods Will Be Gods"), and one non-album single ("Never Stop").
