Editorial Review:
Modern rock superstars Echo & The Bunnymen originally formed in Liverpool in 1978, comprised of Ian McCulloch (vocals), Will Sergeant (guitars), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums). Key figures in the thriving club scene that planted the city on the pop music map again for the first time since the Beatles hey day, the Bunnymen went on to become one of the most influential British bands of the last three decades. This 11-song collection contains some of their greatest hits including 'Rescue', 'Do It Clean', and 'The Killing Moon.'

Description of Songs to Learn and Sing:
Songs to Learn and Sing is a staple in the collection of post-new-wave rock. It was an era when the term progressive had just replaced the word alternative to describe music that was just too cool for American radio. This album is a compilation of Echo and the Bunnymen's British chart toppers from 1980 to 1985. The only song on this album that received attention beyond the band's cult following was "Bring on the Dancing Horses," made famous by its inclusion in the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Echo and the Bunnymen are a tinny, twangy, ever-so-slightly-out-of-tune guitar band. What lead singer Ian McCulloch lacked in vocal range he made up for by embracing his comfort zone with full-force cracking, emotional yelps. A distinctive, recognizable sound, even to the barely initiated, this album marks an era yet is so enjoyable, it remains proudly timeless. --Beth Bessmer

Songs to Learn and Sing Reviews:
The Good Stuff from The 80's 5 Star Review
2009-11-04 - To me this is the good stuff from the 80's, not the stuff you would hear on the radio day after day on hit radio, not the weekend special 80's programming that plays that one song by the top 40 bands of the 80's...this is the real 80's that we missed due to being young and impressionable, and oversaturated with contemporary pop and alternative music of the day. I do remember a show called 120 Minutes (on Mtv) that might have played this very late at night though, and it was the most intriguing interesting music for many people they would hear, and it came in such small doses, it was like just a small portion when we were starving for something substantial.

I admit to being a big Duranny back in the day, and even today, and did have my favorite new wave songs and top 40 songs, but to me just as important was the cutting edge of the 80's scene in all genre's of music, today more than ever it is quite clear as to what won out, in the long run you have to look around for the really good stuff, you would have to go to a cutting edge club somewhere, or a friends house back in the day, purchase at an out of the way record store if you were to hear such classic music from an exciting time.

A Collection of Songs from the Other Brilliant Band from Liverpool. 5 Star Review
2008-03-26 - This is a benchmark collection of British progressive-post-punk rock. Whenever I hear a song by other truly great bands like U2, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure, and Pavement, I always think of this influential Liverpool alternative band, Echo & the Bunnymen (consisting of Ian McCulloch, guitars; Will Sergeant, bass; Les Pattinson, guitars; and Pete de Freitas, drums), whose 1978 to 1988 original sound clearly influenced these other bands. While (in my opinion) Ocean Rain is the band's best release, Songs to Learn & Sing is a 1985 compilation album featuring all of the band's singles, which reveal the band's trademark sound. Songs include:

1. Rescue 4:18
2. The Puppet 3:04
3. Do It Clean 2:44
4. A Promise 3:40
5. Back Of Love 3:12
6. The Cutter 3:54
7. Never Stop 3:31
8. The Killing Moon 5:46
9. Silver 3:19
10. Seven Seas 3:18
11. Bring On The Dancing Horses

These really are songs to learn and sing!
Deep vocals of Ian McCullough are strong and the lyrics are catchy such as Do It Clean which is still playing in my mind.

The Most Underrated Band in History. 5 Star Review
2006-01-04 - Well, you've heard a million times the cliché "still sounds fresh today," and I'm here to tell you that this hackneyed saying is absolutely true when it comes to this CD. When I was mostly unfamiliar with punk music I associated the best of it with the otherworldly sound of the introduction to "The Cutter." Later, after listening to the album extensively, I realized that "Bring on the Dancing Horses" was the worst of the eleven tracks (which is really saying something). It did not take long before they became, like the Smiths, personal favorites. Echo was one of the most original sounding bands of the eighties with talent to burn. They featured the type of complexity that made it tough on critics to reduce that wonderful decade into a stew of big hair, kitsch, and campy lyrics. This is about as passionate a band as there has ever been, and when I play "Songs..." I do not jump about. I let it wind through and imbibe its beauty and perfection.
