Description of Eddie Murphy Raw:
The audacious concert film Eddie Murphy Raw rubbed some people the wrong way upon its release in 1987, but there's no denying that between Murphy's more insensitive bits about women and gay men is some of his most inspired material. While the young comedian indulges an unattractive homophobia and rants about the sexual manipulativeness of all females, he makes up for it with an amazing story about being chided by Bill Cosby for obscene humor and does a great impression of Mr. T falling under the spell of a Jedi mind trick. The best stuff comes deep into the show, particularly a long tale of being pressured into a fight at a club, resulting in a phone call to Murphy's drunk father, the latter in the middle of a verbal attack on his wife. The scene is genuinely horrifying and funny, testament to Murphy's early reputation as heir to Richard Pryor's mercilessly autobiographical brilliance. --Tom Keogh
Eddie Murphy Raw Reviews:
Raw
2008-06-02 - Raw is what this is. Eddie at his best. The early days were some of his best.
Eddie at his stand up best
2008-04-02 - Eddie Murphy Raw is the second stand up film Eddie Murphy did and it's just as funny as his first. The topics froms gays, sex, Wacko Jacko and Mr. T are all very very funny. Some of the film's best moments are when Eddie does impressions. If you've never seen this film you're in for a treat.
Good stuff
2008-04-01 - Brought back memories. Not as funny as delirious, but good none the less. It's worth the price if only for sentimental viewing. It's just weird seeing Eddie Murphy so young and RAW. :-)
Classic
2008-02-08 - You can watch it over and over and laugh like it's the first time you saw it.
Come back to the stage, Eddie, please...
2008-01-28 - When looking at this perfectly preserved time-capsule piece from the 80's, it's easy to see why Eddie Murphy thrilled and offended so many people when he was at his absolute peak. And, considering how "RAW" effectively marked the end of his stand-up career and the beginning of a long, painful slide into movie also-ran status, one just has to quote from Eddie's African bush-bride Umfoofoo: "EDDIE! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?!?"
