    Description of Mulan (Special Edition):
Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor.

The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

    Mulan (Special Edition) Reviews:
Enjoyable, But Not A Disney Classic 3 Star Review
2009-10-15 - Upon its release, "Mulan" was seen as an improvement over the relatively-forgettable "Hercules". And rightly so. That said, it falls short in comparison to the earlier Disney films of the decade. The songs are subpar, the animation lacks the elegance of "Beauty and the Beast" & "The Little Mermaid", and the characters are anything but memorable. I applaud Disney for the story (yes, I know it's based on a Chinese legend), but that's about it. Thankfully, Disney resumed to top-notch animation a year later with "Tarzan". "Mulan", on the other hand, belongs more to the films they released in the 2000s: they're enjoyable but lack the oh-so-famous magic of their real classics.

    Amazing movie! 5 Star Review
2009-08-20 - Let me say something- this is EPIC! Mulan is about a chinese girl, maybe sixteen or seventeen years old, who has failed to impress the matchmaker. Meanwhile, her aging father is to go into the army. Not wanting her father to die, Mulan cuts off her long hair, and dresses as a man. With her faithful horse, Mulan sets off for the army camp. Mulan's ancestors command Mushu (the ex-guardian) to awaken the family's dragon. Unfortunatly, Mushu manages to crumble the statue of the dragon, and now has to go after Mulan! Along with Cri-kee, the cricket, Mushu sets off to get Mulan back. Well, i don't want to spoil this amazing movie, so I'll leave it off there.

    My impressions on the movie:

It sends comic relief, even though it's not "historically correct" it's amazing. The Huns look evil, even their horses look evil. Mushu is well the funniest character in the film, alongside Mulan's grandmother. Mulan is THE Disney princess; Not worrying about her hair, waiting to be rescued by "Prince Charming" or whether her make-up is on right- she even goes to save her father's life. She's no "Damsel in distress." At ALL. She's the princess to the rescue. Is that any more than to say Mulan is a legend?

I HIGHLY recommend this movie; gather up your little ones for popcorn and soda pop; it's time for a Disney classic.

Mulan from Disney 5 Star Review
    2009-05-30 -
Mulan is a great movie for young and old. It incorporates some cultural sensitivity about ancient China with humor. I enjoyed watching this video with a group of 12 year olds. It was a cross-generational hit!
