Out of the Past: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Rights in America Reviews:
    R rating??? 4 Star Review
2009-12-05 - I really liked this documentary and want to show it to the Gay-Straight Alliance at the high school where I am a counselor and club advisor. But I can't because it's rated R. Am I the only one out there who is outraged by this insanely inappropriate rating? I will have go through considerable obstacles to show it and believe it is rated R SOLEY because of it's about gay people.

There are no swear words (it is about Mormons, after all), no overt sexual references, no nudity nor even any kissing or PDAs. OK, two lesbians hold hands in a parade - call the movie police! My students and I talk often about how movies about gay people or gay issues seem to be rated more harshly by the Motion Picture Association of America. People should take a stand on this highly discriminatory and thoughtless ratings process. I've already contacted one company from whom I first rented this documentary and plan to contact the MPAA, and depending on my energy level, anyone I can find who is connected to the film.

In any case, I highly recommend this film for people of all ages to learn about gay history and activism. The upside to my having to jump through hoops to show it in school is that more adults in our school and town will be "forced" to watch it and learn about these very interesting, mostly neglected, impressive gay people/activists in U.S. history. Fortunately, I work in a very "gay-supportive" town in Massachusetts, so that's half the battle right there. I feel sorry for people in less tolerant places who want to show this well-made film to kids and won't be able to because of some discriminatory, arbitrary rating (with no explanation either, I might add).

(If you want the true dirt on the MPAA, rent "For Your Consideration," but that's another review for another day.)

History every American should know, but too few do! 5 Star Review
2009-05-30 - This is an awesome film. The events documented, going back so many decades, should appear in every American history text. I'm 65 years old, and didn't have a clue. So much was hidden history! It's no wonder, since an elementary school THIS YEAR objected to a 6th grader reporting on Harvey Milk, because "homosexuality" was too controversial! And a little child shall lead them...! Riveting, informative, inspirational.

excellent fast service! 5 Star Review
2009-04-01 - product came amazingly fast and in exactly the condition described. would order from them again in a heartbeat!

A Lovely Combination - Past and Present 5 Star Review
2008-04-26 - This DVD was shown at a campus-wide event sponsored by the Ally Group called "DocuMovie Night". Reception of the message was fantastic. Everyone present enjoyed all of the facts and ideas presented and we had a great discussion following.
The meshing of historical attempts at GLBT movements with the struggle of a 90s high school student's confrontation with a 'solid wall of ignorance' was truly inspiring.

an excellent teaching tool 4 Star Review
2008-02-22 - This documentary raises the awareness of the viewer about common struggles faced by teens who are gay and lesbian. I use it in my Child Development course when we are studying adolescent identity development. It is well done and addresses key issues.
