For anyone who thought the Oscar-winning documentary March of the Penguins was the most marvelous cinematic moment for these nomads of the south, you haven't seen nothing yet. Happy Feet is an animated wonder about a penguin named Mumble who can't sing, but can dance up a storm. George Miller, the driving force behind the Babe (and Mad Max) movies, takes another creative step in family entertainment with this big, beautiful, music-fueled film that will have kids and their parents dancing in the streets. From his first moment alive, Mumble (voiced Elijah Woods) feels the beat and can't stop dancing. Unfortunately, emperor penguins are all about finding their own heart song, and the dancing youngster--as cute as he is--is a misfit. Luckily, he bumps into little blue penguins and a Spanish-infused group (led by Robin Williams) and begins a series of adventures. Miller has an exceptional variety of entertainment: Busby Berkley musical numbers, amusement-park thrills, exciting chase sequences (seals and orca lovers might like think otherwise), and even an environmental message that doesn't weigh you down. Best of all, you don't know where the movie is going in the last act, a rare occurrence these days in family entertainment. A fusion of rock songs, mashed-up and otherwise, are featured; this movie is as much a musical as a comedy. Mumble's solo dance to a new version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" by Fantasia, Patti, and Yolanda may be the most joyful moment on camera in 2006. --Doug Thomas

There are two new animated sequences, which aren't incorporated into the film. One's a half-minute hackysack-themed bit, but the other is a good-looking, two-minute scene featuring the late Steve Irwin as an albatross, who, with Mumble, encounters a blue whale. "Dance Like a Penguin: Stomp to the Beat" is hosted by Savion Glover, whose dancing was motion-captured for the film, but other than a couple basic tips, it's pretty much a demonstration rather than a lesson. In addition to the two music videos (Gia's "Hit Me Up" and Prince's "The Song of the Heart"), "I Love to Singa" is an appropriately matched 1936 Merrie Melodies cartoon in which a young owl ruffles feathers by wanting to sing jazz for his classical-music-loving family. --David Horiuchi

2008-07-16 - Let us keep in mind this movie is not to be taken so seriously. I am a mother that only let my children watch/listen to age appropriate movies, shows, games and music. It is so hard to find good clean movies. I have watched this movie with my children and we all fell in love with it so much my youngest child has the Wii version also. This was a happy heart warmer.
We love it.
Lame Feet 
2008-07-07 - Wow, just wow. And not in a good way do I mean Wow. This was bad, really bad. I guess it was going for cutesy, but come on! This was just lame. The storyline was horrendous. The singing was dreadful. And if there had been a pencil or a sharp object anywhere near me...well, nevermind that. If you want good animated movies that both kids and adults will enjoy, go for Pixar. This one was just awful.
Feel Good Movie
2008-06-09 - I loved this movie so much and it's a great family movie. I had to buy it for my mom and Niece who live a few states away. My mom puts it on whenever she is blue to lift her spirits. The music and humor is great.

2008-06-08 - My husband I were in Blockbuster one Friday night, and they had a preview for a penguin movie. The water was mesmerizing, the image so beautiful, I could hardly wait to watch it with the kids.
When we rented Happy Feet, I was excited to finally see that beautiful penguin movie. Or so I thought. What I saw instead was a bunch of penguins singing Prince songs, among other things. Warner brothers was showing off its music catalog with Happy Feet, but I don't know what they were doing as far as movies go. That was a jumbled mess with Robin Williams playing like 5 characters and a bunch of loopy tap dancing numbers. Savion Glover looks like a street person in the scary special features section too. That loopy Prince song playing in the credits messed me up man. I kept shaking my head to erase that bad trip.
Based on an ancient cartoon about an opera singing papa owl with an `Owl' Jolson son, Happy Feet is a fish out of water story. Sort of. Then there's a weird plot line about finding the aliens who polluted the water and got rid of the fish, and then the deal about the penguins can communicate by tap dancing, and how that even catches man's attention. And they all get fish! I think. Because by that point I was gone. Couldn't. take. it. any. longer!
I was still shuddering weeks later when Surf's Up appeared in the mail. I saw the beautiful water, but I was still muttering "I can't believe!" under my breath. I mean, Happy Feet! It looked so promising!
Then the movie started. It was like a documentary. I laughed, and continued laughing for the whole movie. Except for the brief minutes when I fell asleep. But that's just me. It's a rare movie that doesn't put me to sleep. I think that would be about 2 movies, tops. But I digress.
Surf's Up was just so funny. And cute. And what a great story. I don't want to give any more away. Rent it, immediately! Then tell me how right I am.
The kids didn't know how bad Happy Feet was until they saw Surf's Up. Their brows furrowed as the wave of realization hit them. All penguin movies are not alike!
They couldn't discern as much when the comparison was between Finding Nemo and Shark's Tale. They had actually prefered the ghetto alternative mess to the timeless classic. They're all too young to catch the nuances of difference between Bug's Life and Antz and Ant Bully.
But Surf's Up and Happy Feet? Even the 3 year old knows.
Surprisingly beautiful
2008-05-22 - I found this movie to be really inspiring. Great soundtrack for parents and children alike. It was upbeat and happy to me and my daughter. And it even makes you think a little. I understand how it could offend a few peoples egos.
