Editorial Review:
Aimed at teens with numb senses of humor, The New Guy earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school’s social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he’s worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of There’s Something About Mary) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ’s dad, and a fresh cast that almost makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon
The New Guy [Region 2] Reviews:
BETTER THAN AVERAGE TEEN COMEDY!
2009-11-06 - 'The New Guy' offers nothing new, but gets a big boost from its cast. We've seen it all before a million times in those 80's
teen comedies, loser becomes school's top dog and pines for the most popular girl and get her and then they find out about his past and everything unravels. Yeah......we've seen this all before!
What could have been a huge dud turns out to be surprisingly funny and charming because of a good cast, an energetic soundtrack and a few differences in the clichéd story line. The quirky DJ Qualls in the title role gives an enthusiastic performance and cutie pie Zooey Deschanel is always a treat. If you like these types of films, this one is much better than I expected it to be. It's not original, but it is a charming entry in the genre.
Look for cameos from Gene Simmons, Lyle Lovett, Henry Rollins and Tommy Lee.
Cool movie, but better than the theatrical release.
2009-09-13 - There are a few extras that are worth it. Zooey and Eliza are fantastic along with DJ.

2008-10-11 - I thought this was really good! It has a really awesome plot and message! Dizzy is a nerd who so desperately wants to be cool. After he's expelled from school, he seeks help from a prisoner named Luther. Luther helps him to become cool. He transfers to a new school and gets people to like him. He beats up the bully. he gets the geeks and cool people to like each other, he helps the football players win the big game, and gets the girl. The bully is sick of it, so he teams up with the bully from Dizzy's old school and sets a trap for him. If you love comedy, you'll love THE NEW GUY!!!
