Description of Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas [Remastered]:
It'd be hard to imagine a happier wish than the one this jazz vocal legend offers her listeners on this urbane-yet-homey collection of holiday favorites. The First Lady of Song recorded these tunes in 1960, at the peak of her interpretive powers. As such, she puts her singular stamp on everything from a sultry vamp like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" to the sweet and cozy "The Christmas Song." Even potentially shopworn standards like "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sound fresher when they're coming from Ella Fitzgerald. --David Sprague
Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas [Remastered] Reviews:
Ella is great - the remastering isn't
2009-11-27 - I have this release and the original release of this album, and the mastering is much better in the original. This release loses some of the ambience of the original and bumps up the vocal level a bit. I also feel the extra songs on this release add very little and were not included in the original release for a reason...
All this said, Frank deVol's arrangements are great - both witty and sensitive, and OF COURSE, Ella's vocals are absolutley wonderful.
One of the greatest holiday albums ever
2009-11-18 - Recorded in 1960, when Ella Fitzgerald was in some of the finest form of her long and legendary career, this is nothing less than the epitomy of a great secular holiday album, and undoubtedly bears some inspiration for many female Christmas albums since. As you'll be able to see from experiencing this album, Ella can take even the most standard, formulaic, and overdone Christmas tunes and turn them into masterpieces. Her scat style of singing could not possibly be improved upon here, and she gets outstanding backing support (especially those slinky horns on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas") from the prolific Frank DeVol and his orchestra, who give her some rousing and harmonious choruses to accompany her singing.
Brilliant!
2009-02-21 - First, musically this album is wonderful. Christmas music?? Sure, on a couple of the tracks, but the majority of the album is 'anytime' music.
Second, it is beautifully recorded and mastered for this CD. Ella is in her prime and the orchestrations / arrangements are brilliant.
The best xMas CD I own! First rate.
Great Holiday CD!
2009-01-06 - The holiday season was made better for me because I was able to listen to Ella swingin' her way through all of the traditional Christmas tunes.
Love this Christmas Album. Ella is always great.
2008-12-16 - I was shocked to see this MP3 download at such a great price. 18 songs, some well known a few new to me. Ella jazzes up the songa in her own well known special way.
I am enjoying this album so much and it is a great addition to a traditional Christmas music collection.
