Editorial Review:
Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman
The Edge [Region 2] Reviews:
The Edge
2009-10-17 - I love this movie. Very suspensful and action packed with beautiful scenes of Alaska. Add a ticked off Grizzly bear chasing the stranded folks, and it's a party. This movie will keep your attention. Very entertaining.
Great movie purchase
2009-10-08 - Being a lover of Alaska, wildlife, and Anthony Hopkins, this movie is right up there with the best!! It is an edge of your seat movie, as you wait for the next thrilling moment, just knowing that something is getting ready to happen, keeps you ready for the next thrill. If you like thrillers, you will love this movie.
A little cheesy
2009-08-24 - I'd never heard of this. Was it any kind of a hit in theaters? I thought the bear scenes were a bit cheesy, especially when the bear lands on a spear wielded by 70-something Anthony Hopkins. Baldwin is his usual smarmy self. The whole thing is a little unrealistic, in that these guys would have frozen or starved to death long before they finally trap a squirrel, which they then don't bother to eat as they huff their way, barely clothed, often soaking wet, through Alaskan wilderness for mile after mile, hardly ever slowing down. Also, I laughed out loud when they appear in perfectly tailored bear skins after slaying the bear. How did they sew them together? The skins, freshly removed from a dead bear, would have been soaking wet with blood and gore for days or weeks, in reality. The David Mamet dialogue is pretty good in parts. I never learned the exact relationship between the two rivals, Hopkins and Baldwin. In all, a somewhat entertaining watch.
Adventure, Suspence and more
2009-08-08 - I spent a year in Alaska and I have some idea of what the weather and wildlife is like. At times the movie becomes too Hollywood, you know what is going to happen next. Most of the time you wonder what is going to happen next and how they will get out of their predicament.
A simply great film
2009-07-28 - Why this motion picture did not gain more attention is confusing.
Even the DVD is lacking in Extras and should have been a prime candidate for Commentary.
Anthony Hopkins can do no wrong.
Alec Baldwin is terrific and at his best.
The supporting cast of Mr. Perrinneau, Ms. MacPherson, Ms. Wilhoite, and Mr. Jones are superb.
All under the grand direction of Lee Tamahori who gives David Mamet's dialogue a run for the money.
It is an action tale. A story of survival intertwined with an intense character study of two men who find their values at the wrong time in the wrong place.
One cannot forget to mention the magnificent soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith which in itself has become a rarity to procure.
A fine piece of cinema that needs to be seen more than once.
