  • Editorial Review:
A plane crash in the freezing Alaskan wilderness pits intellectual billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) against self-satisfied fashion photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) in a brutal struggle for survival. Each soon discovers that the greatest danger resides not in nature, but from human fear, treachery, and quite possibly murder.

Description of The Edge (Widescreen Edition):
Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

    The Edge (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Good Surprise Ending. 4 Star Review
2009-12-14 - Excellent script, excellent casting.

This movie demonstrates that you cannot out run a Grizzly, nor out climb, nor out swim this killer bear. This bear is the Great White Shark of Alaska.

I will not spoil the ending, but you don't have a clue till the last 10 minutes.

    Buy new or used.

    Outdoor Thriller 5 Star Review
2009-12-09 - Have watched this movie a lot of times and still a great show, see something new every time from the plane crash to the bear attack to the deadfall. Anthony Hopkins is great to watch but Alec Baldwin needs to be slapped around some. All in all an A1 movie.

    The Edge 5 Star Review
2009-10-17 - I love this movie. Very suspensful and action packed with beautiful scenes of Alaska. Add a ticked off Grizzly bear chasing the stranded folks, and it's a party. This movie will keep your attention. Very entertaining.

Great movie purchase 5 Star Review
2009-10-08 - Being a lover of Alaska, wildlife, and Anthony Hopkins, this movie is right up there with the best!! It is an edge of your seat movie, as you wait for the next thrilling moment, just knowing that something is getting ready to happen, keeps you ready for the next thrill. If you like thrillers, you will love this movie.

A little cheesy 3 Star Review
2009-08-24 - I'd never heard of this. Was it any kind of a hit in theaters? I thought the bear scenes were a bit cheesy, especially when the bear lands on a spear wielded by 70-something Anthony Hopkins. Baldwin is his usual smarmy self. The whole thing is a little unrealistic, in that these guys would have frozen or starved to death long before they finally trap a squirrel, which they then don't bother to eat as they huff their way, barely clothed, often soaking wet, through Alaskan wilderness for mile after mile, hardly ever slowing down. Also, I laughed out loud when they appear in perfectly tailored bear skins after slaying the bear. How did they sew them together? The skins, freshly removed from a dead bear, would have been soaking wet with blood and gore for days or weeks, in reality. The David Mamet dialogue is pretty good in parts. I never learned the exact relationship between the two rivals, Hopkins and Baldwin. In all, a somewhat entertaining watch.
