16 Legendary Covers 1969-70 Reviews:
Elton as you've never heard him before! 5 Star Review
2002-11-10 - There is an interesting story behind this collection. Elton used to do freelance session work on these crude LPs that had reasonable facsimiles of the latest hits, sold in places (mainly in the UK) like Oxfam, Woolworth's, grocery stores, you name it. People then didn't care if it was the same exact songs on the radio, and almost couldn't tell the difference. As for Elton, he wasn't Mr. Moneybags yet! He had to bring home the bacon, so doing these shoestring-budget recordings with "invisible" crack session musicians would be the only alternative from a regular 9.00 to 5.00 job.
Some of these songs I've heard the originals of, others I never heard before in whole or at all, some only hits in the UK. Some he sings with uncredited session singers. You can't tell when he's playing piano or not, since he has long written these humble beginnings off! He knew they'd come back to haunt him!
You don't necessarily have to be a fan, though it helped me get into him more, since Elton can relate to people wanting more albums! I recommend this CD!
Some tracks were left off this edition from others, though there could be more scattered around.
This CD has been reissued numerous times, sometimes with different track and titles.

THE BEST RARITIES OF COVERS OF ROCK SUCESS 5 Star Review
2002-06-30 - This album is rare for any Elton fan, a gret collection of songs of other artists who Elton singing in this album.Inclues McCartney songs.United we stand was my favorite song of this monumental album in my opinion. If you are a greatest hits buyer, this is a collection to add to your list. Elton fan buy this disc? Yes, after he or she has purchased all the 70's Classic Years reissues and Rare Masters
THIS ALBUM IS ESSENTIAL

Boy That Voice Sounds Familiar 3 Star Review
2001-05-27 - Yes folks it's our boy Reg. Seems he had a second career doing anonymous cover versions for cheapie albums. As cheesy as this sounds some of these come off rather well. My Baby Loves Lovin is a smash in my book and his Lou Christie impersonation on She Sold Me Magic is a scream. I also enjoy his Lady D'Arbanville (Cat Stevens) and his Hollies I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top. On the downside he should never be allowed to sing any John Fogerty again, not even in the shower! Should the neophyte Elton fan buy this disc? Yes, after he or she has purchased all the 70's Classic Years reissues and Rare Masters.
