Editorial Review:
Southern Fried Records unearths Elton John's Philly gem from 1977, a track from the infamous Tom Bell sessions of 1977. Includes - '79 Radio Edit Version, Full 1979 Version & 'Three Way Love Affair', plus the bonus video of the title track. Ultra Records. 2003.
Are You Ready for Love Reviews:
Enjoyable listening
2008-07-20 - I love this music artist. The music is enjoyable, but not what I expected.
Remixed Hits: From Elvis To Elton!
2004-01-17 - In 1977, Elton John recorded some songs with Phillies Soul producer Thom Bell, who had many hits with the Spinners and the Stylistics. Elton was not entirely pleased with the results, and a full length album was never released. From the Thom Bell Sessions, "Mama Can't Buy You Love" was released as a single in America in 1979. The song made it all the way up to number 9! From those same sessions, "Are You Ready For Love" was released as a single in England in 1979 to moderate success. With the huge catalog of Elton's major hits, this song pretty much faded from memory, especially in America.
No doubt inspired by the success of Elvis Presley's recently remixed songs, a remixed version of "Are You Ready For Love" was released in England. On August 31, 2003, the song went all the way to number one in the British charts! Listening to the song, it's easy to hear why this once overlooked song became a number one hit. The tune is catchy, the arrangement is soulful with some subtle disco touches, and Elton's vocals are strong and assured. The original song ran nearly 8 minutes long, and had to be spread out over both sides of the 1979 vinyl single. The "79 Radio Edit" takes the original version of the song and trims it down it 3 minutes and 33 seconds of it's best elements. The end result is the creation of yet another Elton John classic!
Not Really Ready
2003-10-26 - For Elton John, he has always made any kind of impact you could imagine in this industry. Whether it is winning the Oscar, or producing a mega-hit on Broadway, you can always count on him not leaving this industry any time soon. That comes within his cases of coming out of the closet in the 70's. He did it proclaiming he was gay, and this song also seems to do it as well. Are You Ready For Love, was a originally released song of Elton's from the 70's, after the moody swings of Blue Moves. Although the song is a little catchy, it isn't always something to swallow at. Still, I'm more drawn into his music from the recent records and not this one. Hopefully, another release that wasn't issued can sound a little better than this.
Are You Ready For A Good CD?
2003-10-24 - This is a great song! Included with two versions of the song (1 edit), are another song, and a music video for the title song. While the music video is rather low compared to today's standards, the song itself is worth it, and the video is just icing on the cake.
Twenty Six Years On
2003-09-26 - There are comments relating to the British release of this CD-single that miss a couple of points. This is a very different version of Are You Ready for Love than the one that is on The Complete Thom Bell Sessions. This is the version that appeared on the Thom Bell Sessions remix EP that sent Mama Can't Buy You Love into the top three.
Are You Ready for Love was always the best song from the sessions. And as good as this is, the album version, with the Spinners, is even better.
Who knows if America is ready for a pure Philly Soul disco track in 2003. But if any song is capable of hitting it big 26 years after it was recorded, this could be the one.
A great over-looked gem from Elton's recording career.
