Editorial Review:
An Oscar win might suggest a score that would need a miracle to be bettered--but this colorful stage adaptation of Disney's The Lion King does so with flair. Composers Mark Mancina and Lebo M worked closely together to fuse the movie's many disparate elements. Where there was a veritable army exercising creative influences for the animated tale, this brings it all under the wings of a like-minded few. This is genuinely apparent as one track flows into the next. The African rhythms--both vocal and in instrumentation--come across as authentic and original all at once. No doubt this is largely through Mancina's passion for peculiar instruments and the possibilities suggested from nightly live performances. "Grasslands Chant" is a good place to hear this. The hit favorites are here of course, but both "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are pleasingly unrecognizable with chorus and shifting beats. Better still is the likelihood they will now be eclipsed by some of the new numbers. Mancina's own "He Lives in You" being a strong contender. With a sound mix as crisp as you'd hope to find, this is rousing stuff. --Paul Tonks

The Lion King (1997 Original Broadway Cast) Reviews:
The Lion King (1997 Original Broadway Cast) 5 Star Review
2009-09-11 - I bought this for my grandchildren and they love it. That is about the best review of all.

gift 3 Star Review
2009-07-05 - We saw this musical when we were in California and enjoyed it immensely. Son-in-law wanted tape of the music for a gift.

Better Than the Original Soundtrack 5 Star Review
2009-05-22 - So, whatever you think about the origins of The Lion King, Julie Taymor's Broadway adaptation is a stunning mixture of theater, puppetry, music, and dance. I saw the original Broadway cast in 1998, in the first year of its run, and I was astounded. I was fifteen, and didn't expect much going in (it's hard to please fifteen-year-olds), but it honestly changed my perspective of both musicals and puppetry in regards to edgy, dynamic, mainstream theater.

In short, I immediately went out after the show and bought the soundtrack, and I haven't turned back to the film soundtrack since. Not only are the African lyrics more emphasized, but they added new African songs (Zulu, I think is what language they're singing in), and many new songs that only add to the magic of the show. And if you've never heard Heather Headley before (she played the adult Nala), you're in for a real treat. The song they wrote for Nala is stunning with Headley's strong, rich voice in the melody.

So, if you've seen the stage show, buy this soundtrack and relegate the film soundtrack to the shelf. If you haven't seen the stage show, you might love it anyway, though you might be a bit confused to hear songs that weren't in the film.

Great music - few differences from the movie soundtrack 5 Star Review
2009-05-17 - I have always liked the cartoon version of this. It's basically the story of Hamlet, where the king is murdered by his brother and avenged by his son. Though since this is Disney, the body count isn't quite as high as Shakespeare's version, and there's more of a happy ending. But still...

This is obviously different than the movie soundtrack. The voices are different, some of the lyrics have changed, and there are a few extra songs. My favorite extra is "They Live In You". That was on the second Lion King album from the movie (came out years ago - I've got it around here somewhere...) and I had forgotten how much I loved it.

This is quite a visual soundtrack (seriously - if you've seen the movie or the stage musical, you can picture the entire story as it unfolds.) There's the carefree happiness of childhood, the terror of growing up, and the peace (and maybe more terror) that comes from the responsibility of adulthood. And you gotta love a song by a flatulent warthog.

Hakuna Matata!!
