I Regret Buying this DVD
2008-11-02 - This is a horrible DVD! All it is, is three men trashing Elton John and his music. I sat there wide eyed, with my mouth hanging open in disbelief as I heard the men continually bash EJ. They say such absurd things to the effect that the song 'Daniel' is flawed, 'I'm Still Standing' was his last hit (and wasn't that good, anyway), and that he has been writing bad songs ever since. One guy went so far as to say that Elton's songs are NOT timeless, that people will soon forget about his music, and stop listening to anything else he does from here on out.
Needless to say, I was, and still am, flabbergasted.
I then read on the package that this DVD is unauthorized, and was not approved by EJ or any agency affiliated with or working for him. THAT SAYS IT ALL.
Afterwards, I destroyed the DVD, and threw it away in the garbage dumpster.
Elton's songs ARE timeless, and he continues to churn out high quality and wonderful music! Just observe the numbers of CDs and DVDs he continues to sell, and the numbers of fans who flock to his concerts to this day!

same as rock case study dvd?
2008-10-27 - This seems to be the same as the Rock Case Study DVD (based on what I've read about it,) which I was hoping to avoid. I actually wonder if they retitled it for this very reason. Don't know if Rock Case Study included the Kiki Dee bonus interview or the booklet (a fond account of Elton's rise to fame, enjoyably written by an early friend and associate.) All the live clips are very low quality footage from the same 80s concert. The core of the dvd is two critics who make the most absurd, uninformed, twisted and random comments throughout. One complains that Elton didn't have enough vocal range (?!!!) and generally finds his voice annoying anyway (an ideal candidate as a main commentator clearly,) the other claims that Elton was never really that good. One argument that kept coming up was that Bernie Taupin's lyrics often don't "make sense" on close inspection. Although this is a fairly common line of thought among critics, who tend to be so concerned with the literary analysis of music and their own convoluted intellectual ideas about things that the intuitive reality of art seems to escape them. Do they think Taupin really tried to make literal sense but somehow failed to see that he hadn't succeeded? I guess we'll have to forgive Rimbaud, Apollinaire and Dylan their blunders. Also common to critics generally, the commentators disparage Elton for being stylistically middle of the road. Putting aside the fact that Elton was in fact a great innovator who pioneered the creation of the road itself (John Lennon claimed he was the first new thing to come along since the Beatles,) to criticize art on the basis of style is meaningless. Stravinsky said that style is a myth. Anyone with any depth of insight into art can appreciate this. It's just a point of departure; great art can and has been made in every style. But after all, why bother with what I or the critics have to say about Elton. Why not go put on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and hear for yourself what the reality is.
