Editorial Review:
In its third foray into animated features, DreamWorks came up with something unfortunate: the routine animated picture. Plagued with production problems (it was originally conceived as a mold-breaking PG-13 adventure), the likable film is a Hope/Crosby-style road picture about two scalawags who stumble upon the Latin American paradise of El Dorado, the mythical city with riches of gold. Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline are quite fun as Miguel and Tuilo, two Spanish con artists who are shipwrecked in the New World with a scene-stealing horse. The pair follow a map to the secret city where their loyalty will be tested: do they return home rich men or continue to live in this paradise? Of course there are some obstacles: a high priest (Armand Assante) is locked in a power struggle with the benevolent chief (Edward James Olmos) and the perfunctory girlfriend (Rosie Perez) puts the two friends at odds. Like too many of the animated features of its time, The Road to El Dorado impresses only on a visual level (it's drenched in gorgeous greens and golds). The story and Elton John's songs are quite forgettable; only Branagh and Kline's playful banter keeps the film alive. The PG rating is for some bare backsides and a suggestion of off-screen sex that should soar right over the little ones' heads. Slick and light, it's a fine 83-minute entertainment for ages 5 and up, including the nondiscriminating adult. --Doug Thomas
The Road to El Dorado [Region 2] Reviews:
Out of the Blue...
2009-12-02 - I beg to differ but The song "Out of the Blue" is one of my favorite songs from an animated movie ever...and animated movies have produced some of the most meaningful songs in the last 20 years. That song at least deserves some kudos. As for Kline/Branagh - comedy at its best for kids and adults and i agree - the horse steals the show.
Pure Gold
2009-08-08 - What a delightful surprise. As a parent of a young one, I am always looking for something my little one will really enjoy, that is also child friendly and at least semi engaging for me the parent, (since if the little one likes it, it will be played often). If there is a Super Walmart near you, you might be familiar with their $5 Movie bid. I kept seeing this movie in that $5 movie bin but based on some negative reviews, I figured it was not worth it. After months of looking at it, I reconsidered, its just $5 dollars. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid $20 dollars for it, the DVD has gotten that much use - its been worth it.
What is good - characters, dialogue is funny, very colorful, and some nice original music.
It is not an historical or cultural piece, but neither was it intended to be. I wish your little one enjoys it as much as mine has. God Bless You and your Family.
Road to Eldorado
2009-03-03 - This is an incredibly fun movie and has been a family favorite since its release. We were replacing our original copy.
Like many good animated films - the humor is at many levels so that all ages can enjoy it.
Gold in El Dorado
2009-02-25 - The Road to El Dorado is one hour and twenty-nine minutes long and was released on March 31, 2000. It tells the story of two con artists Tulio (voiced by Kevin Kline) and Miguel (voiced by Kenneth Branagh) who are using fixed dice to win money. The two also win a map that tells where the city of El Dorado. El Dorado is a city of gold. The people find out that they are using fixed dice. They two flee for their lives and wind up unintentionally on a boat to the new world. Tulio and Miguel are caught and thrown in the bridge. The two escape with Cortés' horse, Altivo. The three of them wash ashore in the new world and the adventure begins. Tulio, Miguel, and Altivo arrive\find El Dorado with the help of their new friend Chel (voice by Rosie Perez). Chel show Tulio and Miguel how to survive in El Dorado pretend to be gods. There is more to this film but I am too lazy to tell the whole story. The movie mixes art and computer animation together. The Road to El Dorado is a great movie to watch and I am giving it an AAA+++.
happy to have it
2009-02-04 - I wanted the movie and was very surprised to get it as fast as I did.
