Editorial Review:
"Simpson's guide makes admirable strides in rescuing Elvis's legacy from the culture industry's facile biographical whitewashings...witty, evocative descriptions of the top 50 recordings impel you to revisit these old hits, the generously annotated, comprehensive movie listings should prompt you to avoid Cinema Elvis whenever possible." -PopMatters.com
The 70th anniversary edition of the Rough Guide to Elvis by Paul Simpson (Rough Guides, April 2005) rescues the king from the distance of history and sheds light on one of the most famous and misunderstood figures of the twentieth century.
Written for both old and new fans alike, The Rough Guide to Elvis examines Presley’s life and the events that shaped it, his music, the people who influenced him, and his mysterious after-life. This updated anniversary edition includes new Elvis releases from the past two years and recent findings about his manager, Colonel Thomas Parker and mother, Gladys.
The Rough Guide to Elvis 2 (Rough Guide Reference) Reviews:
Not a sequel
2006-02-17 - Although this is listed as "The Rough Guide to Elvis 2," it's not a sequel, but rather the earlier Rough Guide in a slightly larger format with a new cover. The contents are identical.
It's still a spectacular book on the man, opinionated yet comprehensive. It's a perfect starter book for King neophytes, covering every aspect of his career, and also an ideal Elvis "desert island" book - if you could only have one.
Great book for any Elvis fan!
2005-08-21 - This book was recommended in a magazine and I am so glad I bought it. Very insightful and full of interesting facts that I had never known before.
