    Description of Persuasion [VHS]:
Movie adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels were all the rage (relatively speaking) in the mid-1990s. Clueless updated Austen's Emma, which was more conventionally adapted in another version (Emma) starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Emma was produced yet again, this time for British television, as were a celebrated miniseries of Pride and Prejudice and this splendid film of Austen's Persuasion. Persuasion is the story of a love that survives eight years of dormancy and the frustrating obstacles of class prejudice in 19th century England. Anne (Amanda Root) is captivated when she meets the dignified naval officer Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), but she is advised to discourage his romantic overtures because he has no fortune. They meet again eight years later, but now Capt. Wentworth has become wealthy while Anne's father is in reduced circumstances in the wake of reckless extravagance. A series of circumstances ensue which prevent Anne and Wentworth from expressing their mutual and inevitable love. The film's success depends entirely on the subtle, superb performances of Root and Hinds. The film builds slowly, occasionally leaving you wondering if anything at all is going to happen. When it does, you realize how carefully crafted a film this is, and the final result is grandly rewarding. --Jeff Shannon

    Persuasion [VHS] Reviews:
    How disappointing! 1 Star Review
2009-12-24 - Having very much enjoyed recent (and not so recent --- 1940's P&P) film versions of my favorite Austen books (P&P, S&S, and Emma) I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, since Persuasion is probably my "favoritest" Austen of all. How disappointing! I have no quarrel with the casting or the costumes or the sets or the scenery; BUT it seems to me that anyone who hasn't read the book will have little or no idea where the title comes from. Lady Russell's persuasions eight years before the novel opens are only alluded to in passing, and those during the course of the movie itself seem more like intimidations.

Rather they should have titled this particular film "Family From Hell, after an idea of Jane Austen's"

    Perfection 5 Star Review
2009-12-18 - Other than Emma Thompson's Sense & Sensibility and A&E's Pride & Prejudice this is my favorite Austen film and I have seen almost all of them over the years,I thought this one was one of the most romantic.Everyone in the cast was excellent, especially Root and Hinds. When Anne read Wentworth's letter my heart was beating faster than hers! Beautifully done by one and all!

Love the book? You'll love this! 5 Star Review
2009-12-01 - This version of Persuasion sticks very close to the book. Of course, this is a normal length film, so some things have to be changed or left out. But mostly, when there isn't time for an event, it is implied or hinted at. This makes the movie a bit confusing if you've never read the book. Especially at the begninning, there's a lot of "filling you in" very quickly while you're still figuring out who's who. This movie stays true not only to the events in the book, but also to the feeling of the book. If you've read the book, you'll love this movie! Don't waste you're money on the newer version.

a wonderful movie 5 Star Review
2009-11-16 - This movie is touching and warm in feeling. The acting is excellent and the scenes absorbing. Amanda Root is fabulous as Anne Elliot. This production is faithful to the novel. Only wish the camera had been steadier in some of the outdoor scenes.

    Persuasion 3 Star Review
2009-11-11 - Movie received in great shape. Was released in stores soon after purchased. Good movie but not one of my favorites.
