When someone dies a horrible death, their spirit becomes confused and angry. They become "Vinyan". A couple leaves the civilized world behind and descends into a living nightmare in this chilling horror thriller. Six months after losing her only child in the Southeast Asia tsunami, Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart, Mission: Impossible) is convinced she sees him in a film about orphans living in the jungles of Burma. While her husband (Rufus Sewell) is worried that she's losing her mind, he still agrees to take her to search for their son together. Introduced to a dangerous gang of human traffickers, they find themselves alone and stranded in the middle of a treacherous jungle, set upon by a band of feral children. Has their search for their son led them to a fate more horrific than death?

    Vinyan Reviews:
    Vinyan 3 Star Review
2009-10-01 - The trailer caught my eye so i bought the movie online few days later. Hmm... I'm not real sure what to say about it. I love French movies, especially the horror ones. I got confused and during the whole movie, Emmanuelle Beart said almost nothing and looked like she was in a heavy daze... a lady on a mission I should say. It's a mix bag for me. I think the movie was interesting and I would watch it again.
You have to watch it and decide if it's good or not, cause I'm at a lost.

An unusual human story 3 Star Review
2009-07-05 - I find this Thailand story with horror sidelooks well worth my time.
It's not a great movie, but it has a feeling you don't find every day.

Arsty Horror with a Bleak and Morbid Twist 3 Star Review
2009-06-09 - Artsy film full of vivid colours like reds, bright greens and blues against black; abstract; strange, droning, grating soundtrack of dark ambient style; shaking camera effects that become a bit more annoying than disorientating. These are just a few of the characteristics of the interestingly enough, but dismally bleak story of "Vinyan."

Some of the more chilling effects become apparent when you stop looking for something supernatural to jump out at you. We've been so used to the type of Asian horror that screams "something spooky is about to happen" that it's almost difficult to not miss the true essence of the horror of this film.

The two protagonists, if you will, are likaeable at first; personally, I didn't really like Beart's crazed and obsessive one; Sewell was more personable, although at times you become almost angry at him for letting the whole thing get out of control and you wonder, well, if they're got that much money to blow then whatever happens to them is probably well-deserved. That's just a little personal opinion of mine, not really anything to do with the film itself, but I think most people would find that he carried that much money around with him almost inconceivable . . . and that he would blow that much just to carry on with the whim of his obviously distraught but mentally ill wife was just too much at times. It almost hurts.

This is not a film for people who like to watch things blow up or like movies starring Will Smith. I would recommend this to those who appreciate obscure little artsy films that, at times, are more pretentious than artsy. Go ahead and watch. You might find something redeeming about this one.

Addendum: I wanted to add a little note here. I read some of the "1" star reviews of this film and I find it odd that the viewers (all adults I presume) were so obsessed with the fact that at the end of this movie, the spooky kids are rubbing down Beart with mud. They seemed a bit disturbed by that. Well, maybe it's just me, but I think they doth protest too much; seriously, is the United States the only country that is obsessed with female body parts and only sees "dirty" things in connection with female body parts? Grow up, children.

Very European and symbolic 3 Star Review
2009-06-03 - This is a bit of an unusual movie. Can't really categorize it as a horror movie but might be able to call it a supernatural thriller. Very unusual theme and very European in execution and story. Not your usual run of the mill supernatural thriller.
There are a few scenes that are absolutely nerve wracking and there are a couple of characters in the movie that will make you very ill at ease-which is the goal.

The acting is quite good and the two main stars have a few scenes that really produce emotional result. And Emmanuelle Beart? Stunningly beautiful as always. Worth a look just to watch her.

I can't tell you anything about the movie without giving something away so I will just say that it takes a European slant on things, this means a lot of symbolism and a lot of wondering about what is going on.

I was surprised to see Julie Dreyfus in this movie. She is the uneartly beautiful woman who Plays Sofie Fatale in Tarantino's Kill Bill - Volume Two And she is perfectly cast in this movie -beautiful yet with something very bad brewing underneath -its a bit unnerving how well she plays this duality. It all goes back to the symbolism that you have to watch for.
If you are looking for something different, yet in the horror genre, where they actually spent money to make it, then this is it.

Not for everyone... 3 Star Review
2009-05-27 - ...it all depends on what you're looking for, what you enjoy, and what your expectations are.

If you want a movie with monsters and other classic horror elements, look elsewhere. This is more of an artsy/angsty piece that is supposed to explore hope and despair.

The premise is a bit flimsy, and I enjoyed the sequence of events more than I did the overall storyline. What held my interest was how the couple went deeper and deeper away from civilization. They go from a first-class city to a town, to a village, to the jungle, all the while dealing with unsavory people and trying to maintain their own safety, sanity, and money. It was interesting to see how the mom became more and more obsessed, ignoring the ever-increasing dangers around her and her husband's pleas to go back.

The ending was both shocking and expected. It felt like an appropriate ending to such a weird film.
