After Midnight: Live Reviews: Clapton; After Midnight - Live? 2009-12-01 - The audio quality of this product is mediocre. I am assuming that the problem is in the recording phase. Either that or this is a pirated copy made with inferior recording equipment. The main problem seems to be the very limited dynamic range as if a lot of compression was used to record it. I find it hard to believe that a professional recording made at a live concert can have this poor quality sound.
Twenty Years After 2009-01-30 - This album is for hardcore Clapton fans who know his history. He was beginning his period of collaborations with famous sidemen, having completed a two year run with Phil Collins and was doing a one off tour with Mark Knopfler. The sound quality is not the best but it serves as an interesting historical document. Clapton had retired his famous Blackie Strat which he had assembled from several guitars; it was simply worn out. He designed a new model with Fender with electronic pickups. The sound is fuzzy but with an ethereal quality. EC has since returned to guitars with traditional magnetic pickups.
Knopfler's distinctive picking adds another layer of texture to the songs. This was also the period where Clapton began reviving his Cream material, beginning with a rousing renditon of White Room at the Live Aid show in 1985. WR, Badge, Sunshine, and the leadoff song Crossroads are all well played in a style that you won't find on any other EC live album. Dire Straits' Money for Nothing, a huge hit of that era, is an extra treat.
The mark of a great artist is that they improve with age. Clapton never ceases to amaze me (I've seen him 8 times in 40 years). Today, academically, EC would be a Distinguished Professor. Think of this album as his PhD.
Awful....simply awful 2008-01-26 - Bootlegs, as other reviewers mentioned, are a way of life. This recording is one more reason to ban them altogether. While this may be the only recorded document of this particular show, the audio quality is GOD AWFUL. And to add insult to injury, it's not even in stereo ! In previous reviews, the authors mention that the recording either originated from a video camera at the show or a second generation VHS tape. And (at least with the recording that I purchased) it almost seems as if the original tape was bunched up in a ball and left that way to degrade before transferring to compact disc. Once I removed the shrink wrap, began reading the liner notes and noticed a total absence of production credits, I should have known that I was in for a severe disappointment.
I love Clapton's music as much as any of his fans and while this recording does document a period in E.C.'s career, it is at least from a sonic standpoint even a completist's nightmare. I would strongly suggest to anyone who is considering purchasing this disc either from Amazon or from your neighborhood record store as I did, to at least check out the reviews here at Amazon (I didn't but had heard about the set MINUS all of the misgivings). Believe me, you'll be glad that you did.
Only diehard fans need this 2007-12-03 - Clapton is God, there is no doubt about this. I can't imagine in a million years he would authorize this! My feeling is he hasn't. Other than a decent line up of songs... The quality is poor to say the least. This is why I suggest only diehard fans pick this up. We appretiate an import/bootleg copy from time to time.
My only other complaint is that he even toured with Mark Knopfler... He has never done a thing for me...
Nice Addition to collection 2007-11-09 - This DVD is the video and audio line from the Shoreline Ampitheater in 1988. I think it is a bootleg. However, I would rate it very good for picture and sound. I have a video of this concert which was someone shooting off of the video screen at the concert. This blows that away and is worth getting if you collect Clapton live material.
