Editorial Review:
The pairings of Steve Stills with Cream bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Buddy Miles, plus Eric Clapton with bluesman Buddy Guy and jazz saxophonist Roland Kirk, are the attraction of this so-called "last great jam of the '60s," recorded in '69 (we're not told where). Results are mixed. Stills is negligible, but sparks fly when Kirk and Guy (who thoroughly outclasses Clapton) are onstage, especially together for "Kansas City"; and the veteran, understated Modern Jazz Quartet (then improbably signed to the Beatles' Apple label) are marvelous. But the whole enterprise is torpedoed by audio that sounds like an ancient, very scratched record album coming through the 2-inch speaker in a '62 VW Beetle (the grainy video is precious little better, and the film editing is atrocious). Hard to imagine any of the participants being thrilled that this dubious document is seeing the light of day. --Sam Graham
Supershow Reviews:
I Am Not Concerned Over Audio/Video Purist's Reviews Of This
2009-10-19 - The performances are ASTONISHING! Where else in history can you see Jack Bruce, Buddy Guy and Buddy Miles together on stage kicking ass? And the Modern Jazz Quartet! And Colosseum! And Roland Kirk!
Perhaps the audio and video are not 'perfect' transfers, and perhaps some people have written reviews claiming you should not buy this, but I completely disagree.
Your average consumer is not going to be absolutely disgusted by the so-called "poor quality", because it is NOT THAT BAD!
An audiophile will not like it, because it is not in STUNNING HI-DEF 99.1 MEGA-SURROUND SOUND.
These are the same individuals who will get irate because a mono black & white video of Charlie Parker from the early 50s is not in full color 5.1 surround sound.
If you are into Classic Rock at ALL, you MUST BUY THIS. Certainly if you are into jazz from the 1960s time frame. Footage of Roland Kirk is not something you see every day.
At least this DVD is in FULL COLOR, and it is 95 minutes long! AND....it was filmed PROFESSIONALLY in a TV Studio in the UK!
I saw this for the first time the other day, and it blew my mind!
Buddy Guy and Buddy Miles BOTH turn in STELLAR vocal performances!
The naysayers are going overboard in their distaste for this release.
BUY IT NOW!

For 13 bucks, you cannot go wrong!
Absolute Smashing Performance by Stephen Stills worth price of admission by itself
2009-09-09 - The performance of 'Black Queen' by Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles, Jack Bruce, Roland Kirk, and Dallas Taylor is one of the most musically brilliant achievements I have seen in 40 years of listening to and watching music. By itself, this performance warrants the purchase of the DVD. This is a simply devastating rendition of 'Black Queen.'
A few other songs by Stills and Buddy Miles are also worth seeing. The rest is worth watching maybe one time but I still give this one 4 stars because of these few performances.
Not What I Hope For
2008-12-17 - In 1987, I ordered the VHS version of this concert from a video club I belonged to. When the DVD format came out, I kept my eyes open for this title thinking that the sound and video would be cleaned up. I was delighted when I saw the title come available and ordered it. The quality of the VHS format was better than the DVD. The second disappointment was the Led Zeppelin performance being cut. Luckily for me, I still have the VHS version and it's still in good shape.
The quality of the sound and video has as much to do with the crews that recorded it as it does the transfer, I guess. Still, this is a good show and worth the cost for those who can't get enough!
I Am Not Dazed and Confused
2008-07-17 - This concert was in November 1969 and I was in the audience. I am the woman with the Hendrix hairdo.
The concert was at Eel Pie Island, London. Note the words on the package - 'a haunting record of one of the last great 60's musical events' - it's November 1969. I was there and I'm in the movie.
We don't worry about film quality from the 1960's, just as we don't moan about old family photos from that time. It is not the cameraman that is at fault - he was just working with film and equipment that was available in 1969.
The truth of the matter is that film technology has come a long way since then. I mean, would you whinge and cry over the film quality of an old Leadbelly movie? Of course not. You would simply appreciate the fact that a film of Leadbelly exists in the archive of The Blues. I believe that it is within THIS context that we need to review vintage film footage.
If you keep comparing film quality, resolution and the technicalities associated with it, you will never be happy, and you will be unable to appreciate the performance.
What's here? Jazz, Blues and Blues/Rock - an eclectic mix of sounds for the ears - truly a 'one off'.
So, guys - enjoy this movie: it's one of a kind!
Don't be fooled by other reviews, the music is what matters and it's INCREDIBLE!
2008-04-03 - An amazing concert, some of the best artist of the decade jamming and making amazing music. From rock, to blues, to jazz, to very experimental sounds.
You will get Buddy guy's voice in his finest moments , Eric Clapton licks, Roland's creative phrasing, Still's early rocking attitude and lots of truly amazing musicians you have never heard.
Sure the quality could be better, some songs are cut, others with audio/video out of sync, and some missing, but the quality of the music, the artistic value, and the magic of the moment will make everything worth. I have never heard a concert like this.
