Editorial Review:
A true tour de force, Mama's Gun is that rare sophomore album that shows a maturing artist at her best. Erykah Badu's voice was always her main attraction--its unique sound has been compared to Billie Holiday and Chaka Khan. Here, it's her skill with that voice that shines. Badu shapes her instrument to suit her material (all of it written or cowritten by her). A full range is represented: On faster, danceable tracks like "Penitentiary Philosophy" and "Booty," she sounds gritty and funky. On softer, more introspective tracks, like "A.D. 2000" and the single "Bag Lady," she shows amazing restraint, letting her voice travel lightly over the notes, allowing the songs' emotions to guide her performance. The high point of the disc is Badu's duet with Stephen Marley, "In Love with You," easily the sweetest, truest love song of the year. That alone is reason enough to buy the disc--and you won't regret having done so. --Courtney Kemp
Mama's Gun Reviews:
Neosoul at it's Best!!!!!!!
2009-11-02 - Ms. Badu has got the the vibes the lyrics and the beautiful voice. Her music is not just something to shake your*** to like a lot of the other so called female singers on the market. This CD and all of Ms. Badu's others have meaning and poetry plus so much more to offer and she can really sing.I have many favorites from this CD,my most favorites are Green eyes and Orange moon. The songs are beautiful.I hope Ms. Badu does not slow down too much, I do know she has a couple of kids, but please don't stop this great music.

2009-10-19 - Ooh! This is a must have and I'm so glad I have a copy of my own!! Friends shouldn't let friends live without Mama's Gun....Thanks!
Worth Repeating
2009-08-31 - I had this CD and virtually wore it out playing it so much! It has been in the car, on multiple long distance trips, on planes, at my job, at my home, at friend's homes, in my portable CD player, and over time it got scratched. I went to play it and was so disappointed that the best tracks in my opinion were no longer playable. I would have given this CD 5 stars, but I'm not crazy about the first track "Penitentiary Philosophy" or track 6, "Hey Sugah," but from then on the CD gets progressively better. Like another commenter said the tracks mid to end are the best, beginning with "Kiss Me On My Neck." Classic Erykah vocals and lyrics. My favorites are "Orange Moon", "Time's a Wastin" and "Green Eyes." Buy it or buy it again! If you're a Badu fan, you won't be disappointed!!!!!

Undoubtedly Badu had taken the somewhat monotonous but still palpable formula from her breakthrough debut and steered it into what still remains her artistically assured best, but this creative peak was not without its share of over-indulgence, causing a potential masterwork to simply become another neo-soul modern day classic instead.
