  • Editorial Review:
Single father and former cop Tom Carver (Samuel L. Jackson) has an unusual vocation - he cleans up crime scenes. But when he's called in to sterilize a wealthy suburban residence after a brutal shooting Carver is shocked to learn he may have unknowingly erased crucial evidence entangling himself in a dirty criminal cover up. Directed by Renny Harlin and co-starring Eva Mendes Ed Harris Keke Palmer and Luis Gusman Cleaner is a dark gritty crime thriller that proves cleaning up is the dirtiest job there is.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/CRIME UPC: 043396243927 Manufacturer No: 24392

    Description of Cleaner:
Samuel L. Jackson stars as Tom Carver, an ex-cop who's turned to cleaning up biological waste, such as the messy remains of a violent crime scene. A typical call takes him to an upperclass home, where a white leather sofa is spattered with gruesome viscera. After the living room has been rendered antiseptic, Tom discovers that the murder may be connected to a high-profile police corruption case... a case that may implicate him as well. After establishing the promising premise, Cleaner requires that you overlook a lot of implausible plot turns--but if you can suspend your disbelief, there's a lot to enjoy. Jackson gives a typically skilled performance; like Gene Hackman, Jackson is an actor who never fails to deliver a solid, engaging, thoughtful performance that lifts everything around him. Ed Harris also provides his craggy charisma and Luis Guzman (The Limey) continues to be an indispensable support player. Eva Mendes, on the other hand, comes across a bit flat, though she is as lovely to look at as ever. Director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight) oversells the story--this twisty tale of corruption and overheated love would probably play better with the lean, cool, minimal production values of film noir, rather than Harlin's constantly prowling camera--but he definitely infuses the movie with bubbling energy. All in all, not a great film, but a decent diversion for crime thriller fans. --Bret Fetzer

    Cleaner Reviews:
    Cleansliness 3 Star Review
2008-09-30 - Samuel Jackson portrays a beleivble ex cop, in a pretty beleivable scenario.
He takes care of the 'dirty' jobs. Consisting of cleaning up after deaths, and crime scenes revolving around murders. Living in a corrupt world, and trying to raise the right virtues for a daughter, things are about to get frisky.

His job leads to a conspiracy possibly amongst his old work force. However something just isn't adding up and he's willing to do anything to tie it all together. The movie is a bit boring, kinda rough around the edges, but has a good enough story to keep you interested the whole way through. If this movie isn't a book I feel the need to announce it'd make for a much better book than film. Genuinly haunted from his past, the future brings many painful flash backs. Pressured and not sure where to turn, the movie easily picks up (but not cohesively).

    Good rental

Completely Expected Twists and Turns 1 Star Review
2008-09-15 - Is it bad when great actors work in crappy movies? Does it hurt their careers? In this case, I hope not because what ruined this movie was not the acting. The screenplay and directing however...ouch!
So many opportunities for intrigue and tension were circumvented for no apparent reason. All the problems faced by the characters were solved way too easily. What a bore! What's the point?

Gripping and entertaining film of suspense 5 Star Review
2008-08-30 - Great actors and acting, excellent direction, fascinating cinematography, haunting sound track, and an engrossing plot make me wonder why this film went straight to dvd and didn't open in theaters. Characters you can really care about, involved in thought-provoking, moving situations, make this film emotionally touching in addition to all the suspense. Gorgeous cinematography, with scenes shot in a stark way, from unusual angles, added to the tension. The main character's occupation is one you would never think about, but once he explains it, it seems obvious that someone would have to clean up murder scenes. The job even seems mundane, until one leads him into a complicated cover-up with surprising twists and danger at every turn. I took a chance buying this film, because I usually don't like thrillers, and I enjoyed it much more than I had thought I would because of its psychological and emotional depth in addition to the plot that just grabs you.

    CLEANER 4 Star Review
2008-08-21 - THIS A SLEEPER MOVIE I TOOK A LOOK AT THE COVER AND THE ACTORS THAT WAS INVOLVED THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE WITH A LOT OF SUSPENSE AND INTRIGUE, I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE I GIVE IT FOUR STARS

Better than CSI 5 Star Review
2008-07-14 - I, for one, really liked this movie. Acting was believable and so was the plot. My only complaint was that at the very end there was a piece of another movie (? Youth without Youth???) wedged in... I feel cheated, but I still liked the movie a lot!
