Description of Ghost Rider (Two-Disc Extended Cut):
Once intended as a feature for Johnny Depp, the long-germinating feature film adaptation of Marvel Comics' cult title Ghost Rider stars Nicolas Cage as motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who transforms into a skull-faced angel of vengeance to battle the forces of evil. Though perhaps a bit too mature for the role, Cage brings a degree of humor to the outrageous proceedings; he's well matched by the Easy Rider himself Peter Fonda, amusingly cast as Mephistopheles, the demon with whom Blaze strikes a bargain to save his father, and in turn, causes his transformation into Ghost Rider. Wes Bentley is also fine as Blackheart, the rebellious offspring of Mephistopheles, and Blazes' chief opponent in the film. They're joined by a solid supporting cast which includes Donal Logue, Eva Mendes, and Sam Elliott, but their participation and a relentless barrage of CGI effects can't hide the fact that the story itself, though largely faithful to its comic origins, is rife with clichéd characterizations and glum B-movie dialogue. Fans of the venerable title may cry foul over this adaptation (as they did over helmer Mark Steven Johnson's previous comic-to-movie feature, Daredevil), but less stringent viewers may enjoy the fiery visuals and Cage's typically quirky performance. --Paul Gaita

    On the DVD
Though largely reviled by critics, Ghost Rider performed well enough during its theatrical run to warrant this deluxe edition DVD, which adds nine more minutes to the feature and includes a wealth of extras that cover its production, as well as the Marvel Comics character's history. The deleted footage is a mix of throwaway detail (reporter/love interest Eva Mendes' investigation into the Ghost Rider's identity gets more screen time) and interesting character wrinkles (the reason behind Johnny Blaze's deal with Mephistopheles has a less-than-honorable side) that help in part to give the film some dramatic heft. But these will have less cache with viewers and fans of the film than the supplemental features, which cover the making of the film in broad but interesting detail. Two commentaries are provided, one from director Mark Steven Johnson and visual effects supervision Kevin Mack, and the other by producer Gary Foster; both are informative, but those with a taste for the technical side of moviemaking will find the former more valuable, as both men cover the production intricacies at length. The making-of featurette "Spirit of Vengeance" is actually three 30-minute documentaries which include interviews with the cast, production tidbits, and a eyebrow-raising bit of Nicolas Cage working through his own process of "becoming" the Ghost Rider (those that consider Cage an amusing eccentric will find these clips most enjoyable). A gallery of animatics show how certain scenes evolved from production sketch to finished special effect, but the most intriguing extra is "Sin and Salvation," a four-part documentary that traces Ghost Rider's comic book incarnation from his origin in the 1970s to the revivals and revisions of the '90s and 2000s. For longtime GR fans, this may be the most valuable extra, as it gives an excellent overview of the character, and serves as a reminder of what made him such a cult hit to those who may have been disappointed by this big-screen version. -- Paul Gaita

Ghost Rider (Two-Disc Extended Cut) Reviews:
There are better ways to spend 90 minutes! 2 Star Review
2008-09-23 - Ghost Rider has a thin plot and corny dialogue. The movie fails to pull the audience and excite them. the CGI involved is the highlight of the film but not enough to make it a success. Maybe children below 15 years of age might enjoy the movie but anybody looking for real (or not even that real) substance will be let down by this film. Avoid it if possible.

Great Movie, just watch the kids! 4 Star Review
2008-09-16 - Great movie, the person I bought it from was wonderful! I love Nic Cage and Peter Fonda was a treat. Please be careful with young kids, lots of cursing!

One Of The Best Movies Based On A Marvel Comic 5 Star Review
2008-08-19 - This definently goes into my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Nicolas Cage was absolutley EXCELLENT as Johnny Blaze and Peter Fonda was excellent as the Devil. The Extended Cut offers some new footage and lots of special features. Blackheart, son of the devil played by Wes Bentley was one of my favorite characters in this movie. Just the way he looked, dark and mysterious, was awesome. There are some jump scenes and other pretty scary parts. I would recommend getting this. Also some new info. Ghost Rider 2 coming in 2009. I will update this info whenever more comes.

MPAA Rating=PG-13 for horror violence and disturbing images.

Fiery visuals lit my fire! Spontaneous combustion! 5 Star Review
2008-08-10 - This will probably be the shortest review I've ever written because I'm laughing and applauding so hard--so uncontrollably, I can't quit shaking or still my hands long enough to type!

I know, I know! Ghost Rider (Full Screen Edition) is a supernatural thriller and a decent one at that, so I'm not supposed to laugh. I assure you, I'm not laughing AT the movie, I'm ROTFLMAO with DELIGHT at the animation, graphics, and special effects. The fiery visuals lit my fire! Spontaneous combustion!

You see, I'm a graphic/animation/special effects freak; that's what turns me on!

I was as caught up in the plot of Ghost Rider (Full Screen Edition) as I am with most movies, enjoying it in a normal way ... but when the great Nicolas Cage (motorcyclist Johnny Blaze) metamorphoses into the Ghost Rider--a flaming skull-headed monster--and his chopper lights up like a million candles, I loooooved it.

The scenes where Cage (Blaze) rides the highway ... body, head and cool chopper spitting fire as he roars along, literally incinerating everything in his path ... well, they're stupendous. Filmed on nights as black as Satan's soul, everything but Cage and his bike is stark dark, creating startling contrasts as the blazing bike and burning biker lick out at the darkness with searing tongues of hungry fire.

And wait till you see cowboy Sam Elliot, the first Ghost Rider, riding his flaming horse alongside Cage's fiery chopper. I've heard of burning rubber, but these two Ghost Riders torch that road, leaving fiery tracks and the skeletons of incinerated animals in their wake! Awesome! That's my favorite scene in the entire movie. (Can't you picture Elliot's genial, yet weathered face--with that trademark, lop-sided smirk--as he passes the reins of power on to Cage, the next skull-faced angel of vengeance who must battle the forces of evil?)

Good acting! Good casting! Outstanding photography! Colossal effects! Director Mark Steven Johnson can film my movie any time he wants!

Since the original inspiration for the character was "Ghost Riders in the Sky," a song made popular by Vaughn Monroe in the late '40s, you might want to hear Monroe sing the song as you view a YouTube video that also has some fantastic visuals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xsfw9CEQITA

No need for me to go into the plot because the Amazon description at top of product page does that so well, even giving some spoilers for good measure. But spoilers or not, Marvel comics fan or not, I think you'll enjoy this movie. (This review wasn't so short after all; the subject fired me up! ... lol)
