Editorial Review:
Region All Blu-Ray pressing. In this action thriller from director Michael Bay (PEARL HARBOR, ARMAGEDDON), survivors of global contamination live in a sterile, self-contained world where their every move is monitored. The rules are easy: be pleasant, refrain from asking questions, and don't rock the boat. Everything they need is provided for them, from the white uniforms that magically appear in their closets, to their customized cafeteria-style meals. The survivors all eagerly await their big payoff: winning the lottery and being sent to The Island, the only remaining untainted land in the world. But Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) yearns for more from his life and begins to wonder what really lies outside the thick walls. When his best friend, Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), wins the lottery, he knows that he has to find out the truth about their world before she departs. What he finds is terrifying enough to send Lincoln and Jordan fleeing from the facility to the real world where they quickly discover that they are clones, and that both The Island and global contamination are a ruse. The clones sole purpose is to be harvested for replacement parts when their sponsors need them. With his business now in jeopardy, Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean), the founder of the cloning company, hires a crack team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) to track down his escaped product. Wild chase scenes through Los Angeles circa 2050 are punctuated by high-tech transportation as Lincoln and Jordan run for their lives
Island [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Blu-ray is region free--will play on U.S. players
2009-08-13 - This review focuses on the Blu-ray Disc format, not the movie itself (which is quite good, entertaining, full of plot twists, etc.). I ordered a copy from the Amazon U.K. site based on the positive comments of another reviewer--and YES--this is truly a "region free" Blu-ray Disc. It WILL play on your standard Blu-ray player sold in the United States (which was primarly designed to play 'Region A' discs). I put the disc in my Sony player--and, there was no problem whatsoever--the video and audio are excellent--well worth the price. I paid about twenty dollars, including shipping--a much better price than listed in the U.S. site.
Perhaps "The Island" will eventually be released in the U.S. on Blu-ray (why it hasn't yet been released in the U.S. makes no sense--who makes these decisions?), but for now, ordering directly from Amazon.uk.com is an excellent alternative.
By the way, the excellent 1966 (true story/adventure/historical drama) movie "Zulu" is another "region free" Blu ray Disc that looks absolutely stunning in Blu ray--it is one of the best in my collection--as good as the new movies. You can also order "Zulu" from Amazon's United Kingdom site at a reasonable price.
the one star is not for the movie, it is the price
2009-07-15 - First i thought it was a tipping-error 56 USD, but they really mean it.
I like amazon, but in that case, they are nuts or robbers, maybe both? so i have to wait, until they made a special sale of the movie. I hope so.
The Island Blu-ray Import
2009-06-18 - This review is simply to discuss the differences between the DVD and Blu-ray versions of this film. It's made a nice transition over to hi-def both visually and sonically. Unfortunately, it didn't seem as though they put much effort into the package. The menus are surprisingly bare and it actually doesn't contain a director's commentary like the DVD version. However, it does have the same "Making The Island" featurette. They also divided up the scenes differently for some reason. As for the film itself, there isn't much to say other than if you are looking for two hours of fun, escapist entertainment with loads of eye candy, then you can't really wrong with a Michael Bay film. It's also a nice primer for Transformers, as it's essentially the same creative team. It's tough to recommend this if you already have the DVD version, especially considering the price on Amazon (although I would recommend getting it through a seller on the Marketplace for half the cost), but if you are looking the expand your Blu-ray library then this would certainly be a worthwhile addition.
Worth the Blu-ray price
2009-06-11 - I really do not have time to write a detail of a movie that most people have seen and probably liked. It was great fun in DVD and even more so in Blu-ray. I was able to notice certain things that Hollywood will need to address in the future like the scratches on Scarlet Johansson's face were visibly put on with some kind of clear tape. I could see the edges and the clear portion of the tape.
Highly commendable in BD
The Island (2006) blu-ray
2009-04-06 - AMAZING MOVIE, GREAT STORY, FAST PASTE, NON-STOP ACTION THAT WILL KEEP YOU AT THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. THIS IS EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF FOR A MICHAEL BAY MOVIE. THE ONLY SET BACK FROM THE BLU RAY IS THAT THERE IS NO MICHAEL BAY COMENTARY ON THE DISC WERE AS THE DVD VERSION HAS IT AND ITS GOOD TO HEAR MICHAEL BAY'S TAKE ON THE FILM BEING THAT IT WAS THE ONLY FILM HE MADE THAT FLOPPED AT THE BOX-OFFICE. AS MICHAEL BAY SAID, THE FAULT WAS IN THE MARKETING OF THE MOVIE, ALSO IT WAS A BIG SUMMER WITH HUGE MOVIES SUCH AS START WARS EPISODE III, WAR OF THE WORLDS, ETC. PLUS THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE DID NOT HELP PROMOTE THE MOVIE WELL AND ACTUALLY NO ONE EVEN MY FRINEDS AND FAMILY DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS MOVIE WAS COMING OUT. I WENT OPENING DAY TO THE THEATER WITH MY WIFE TO SEE THIS MOVIE AND I WAS GREATLY SUPRISED THAT THERE WERE ABOUT 30 PEOPLE IN THE THEATER AND I EVEN SHOWED UP AN HOUR EARLY TO GET A GOOD SEAT AND COME TO MY SUPRISE THERE SO LITTLE PEOPLE IN THE THEATER FOR THIS MOVIE WHICH I HAVE NEVER SEEN HAPPEN IN ANY MOVIE. IM GLAD THAT MICHAEL BAY MADE UP THE MONEY LOSS OF THIS MOVIE WITH TRANSFORMERS AND DREAMWORKS FORGAVE MICHAEL. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS MOVIE TO ALL MICHAEL BAY FANS AND ALL ACTION FANS. IF YOU WANT TO HELP MICHAEL BAY OUT TO REPAY THE UPSIDE DOWN COST OF THIS MOVIE , THEN PURCHASE THIS MOVIE, MAYBE WITH ENOUGH PURCHASES THE STUDIOS WILL ALLOW A U.S. BLU RAY RELEASE OF THIS FILM. IN THE MEANTIME GET THE IMPORT YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. THE PICTURE QUALITY LOOKED GREAT ON STANDARD DVD AND IT LOOKS 5 STARS ON BLU RAY . THE ONLY SET BACK IS THE LACK OF EXTRAS AND SUPPLEMENTS SUCH AS THE MAKING OF THE MOVIE , THERE ARE NO TRAILERS OR TV SPOTS (HD) WHICH IS LAKING AND NO MICHAEL BAY COMENTARY. THE PRICE OF THE BLU RAY IS ALSO A LITTLE PRICY BUT ITS WELL WORTH IT. I'LL EVEN GET BAD BOYS 1, 2 AND ARMAGEDDON IMPORTED IF THEY HAD IT ON BLU RAY. LOOKING FORWARD TO TRANSFORMERS 2 AND MICHAEL , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND PLEASE GIVE YOUR FANS BAD BOYS 3, AND A SEQUEL TO " THE ROCK",
